well i can finally say i have 90% of my interior done (that is, 90% of what i am going to do due to funds) i would love to do the carpet and seats but that doesnt look like it'll work out (carpet is a tiny "maybe"; seat def. no (too much $$))
anywho, on with the show...
this is what i used:
and this is what it looked like (after hours of sanding and sanding and sanding)
at first i wanted to leave it like this, but then decided that i didnt like it
now, in its final stages it looks like this...
(with flash)
(no flash)
close up of the dash (im really happy with how this turned out compared to before)
...dont worry, it'll get a little duller within the next couple days
what did i do to my dash you ask?
vynal dye, duh...
WRONG!!
well.. not completely wrong. The first time i did use the dye and left it alone... but it started to chip and peel. this time i dyed, then primed...
and then painted it FTW! "Did you say painted?" yes i did... "Isnt it tacky?" ...nope!
heres how i did it. after i sprayed it with the dye i let it sit for a day. then i primered it with the above primer. yes it was tacky at first!! but if you let it sit for a day or so it dries and will no longer be sticky. after that i painted it. then let sit for a day. applied the tire shine, rubbed it down with a cloth and installed it!!
now to go from here
to here
i found that using a tire sponge and some tire shine worked wonderfully!! (after you apply with the sponge rub it down with a towel. and wah-la!
and finally, yes... i do plan to do the center console, the steering wheel area (later tho) and the back panels are getting done right now.... i may spray bomb the carpets in the near future and just get as much as i can and that is visible. taking it out is not a possibility at the moment because i am about to move into an apartment and will not have the tools/room as i do now.
comments are welcomed!! thanks for looking!
So you just did the primer and then flat enamal for that look? Looks nice!
That looks like my sunfire interior was going to look... I like it. I HATED sanding the door panels. Maybe 3 hours each or something like that...
My only suggestion would be in reguards to the shifter. I say shorten it up and throw a boot on it. I dont have a picture of what mine looked like (was an '02) but with a manual boot on it, it was MUCH nicer looking. I got the snake head knob from a GT, and used a black leather boot. (redline something or other). It looked a lot better, but it also looked stock, like it shouldda been a stock option. At least shorten it Id say
other than that, looks fantastic so far, get the hard part done now! (under the steering wheel) haha.

just so you know your upper dash pad is going to crack. My buddies car came w/ his done, almost even looks like glass until it started cracking and then just went to @!#$. If you want to paint your dash, do it up right and either DYE it, or actually fiberglass it~
are you talking about the paint cracking?? if not, how can it cause the actual dashpad to crack? and... i did dye it first
what happens happens
Arn't J-body dashes covered in vinyl..? You can strip the dash of the vinyl as far as I know and be left with hard plastic.. which is sandable and paintable without cracking..
Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's how I'd go about it. Looks good nonetheless though man, good job.
I love it, I was debating on doing a flat black interior it looks soo clean.

XenonCav: yes, this paint gun things is a Godsend for my finger!!! I have no idea where i got it, i think my dad bought it awhile ago and i found it layin around. They still make some like this... i'd check walmart (maybe) or other hardware stores (lowes, home depot, etc) they may carry them as well. but i would HIGHLY recommend one for anyone using spray paint for longer than 5mins! hahaha
Thanks for the comments thus far! ...Keep em comin!
(BTW: the dash shine has dulled a little and im in love! SOOOO glad i went this route!
