I hate pillar gauge pods, as I'm sure many of you do, becaue of the blind spots they create. So with the help of a friend (Cadwz24) this was made.
Progress until finished:
A template for the pods with exhaust tubing for stability...
Test fitting the pods
Some fleece and super glue
Fiberglass resin applied.... hardner required '
After a coat or two of duraglass
Some more duraglass...
Some primer
Some test fitting
Sanding the primer...
Finally, now we're ready for some paint!
Paint
and the best part, the installation:
Lastly a night shot with the gauges on... it's nice since I actually hooked them into the dimmer. Previously I never hooked that up on this car.
I still need to order one more gauge, but it's the most expensive one (fuel pressure) So I'll hold off on that for a bit.
Sorry about the many many pictures for something so minimal but I've been wanting to somehow rid myself of the pillar pod.
Hope you guys enjoy, I spent more time than anticipated on this. Oh and before anyone says anything. Yes, I know I need to clean the interior.

Agreed....and those gauges match up very nicely, always liked those and how they flow with the OEM gauges.
What's the brand/color you used for paint?
That looks sick. God I wish I could fiberglass.
I'll take one of those setups!!!
I think you should make me a dash like that
since I plan on doing something very similar in the very near future...only I will be keeping the A-Pillar pod as well so I can have a total of 6 gauges.
I used to race cars, now I race myself.

just out of curiousity, did you block off the vent ducts that were there? do you notice a pressure change from the other vents?
I was just wondering, because those vents really help when I have passengers in the back seat, and I've got the A/C on in summertime.

Wow that looks really really good. I wish I could do that.
Keep up the good work man.
very nice work, impressive.
I like it.

Very nice man! Using those exhaust piping is good idea! Fiberglass sticks on metal better than on plastic.
And it looks familiar!

Wow, looks great, how long would you say that took you start to finish? Man, if I had a free summer, I'd try to make like 50 of those and put them up for sale on ebay or something. What do you think that whole piece could go for? The damn gauge pod A-pillers can reach 75$ a piece, something like that should be worth around 200 maybe?
looks good make me wish i had a cavy dash in my sunfire
Yea i spell liek wrong get over it.
id never pay $200 for that in primer....
maybe 80-100
u might get some idiots on ebay to buy them for 200 tho lol
but great work.. im gonna learn to fiberglass
that looks fantastic!
it seriously does look like a factory option.
I'm impressed.. I hope you dont mind if some people follow in your footsteps !
how much will you charge me if I wanted to buy one from you? I should say would you build me one
I will pay
I really wanted this to look almost OEM as if it were meant to be there.... so I'm glad some of you feel that way.
As for the color it's SEM Graphite color.
As for the vents, yes they are blocked off with nice clean wash towels & black duct tape over the duct ends. More heat will come out of the dash end vents when the centers are blocked. I rarely use the A/C, that's why I have a sunroof and I'm not too concerend about passengers in the winter as I have a winter beater.
The exhasut tubing is 2 1/4 ID I believe, take a gauge with you when you purchase it, it will make it easier. I beleive I have about two full days into the project. It lasted over a week but it was on and off working on it. A lot of the time was takeb up with drying time and just trying to get the contours right.
Chad, Yes... we kick ass
I don't mind if people make them, I'm sure it's been done before. I got the idea from chad who used to have one but sold it a while back.
If there is
ENOUGH INTEREST I/we will consider making them for others. So far there seems to be at least some interest. There is a lot of time involved in making these though. Anyways if you're seriously interested say so... It will be taken into consideration.
