05 sunfire hub adaptor
Wednesday, December 24, 2008 9:04 PM
So i did a bit of searching, and didn't come up with much, i had heard before that the 03-05's had a different steering column spline, i did quick search on eBay for the #2401, and it also had come up with not working on 03-05 cavs....now the question is, what momo adaptor do i need for my 05? If it makes a difference my cars Mexican made.

I hoping to pick up a wheel boxing day

merry christmas everyone.

They don't make one for the 03-05s.

so i take it I'll have to swap a column?

or is there another company that makes one?

Swapping your column seems to be the only option. They changed to a smaller spline in 03, which sucks.
I've always wondered if one for a cobalt would fit.

Be safe and look for something 95-02... there is nothing denoting when in 03 they swapped over. Cause i had an 03 steering assembly which didn't work.

thanks guys, not really what i wanted to hear lol, but i guess it will have to be done.......I got a wheel and hub boxing day shopping

which brings me to my nexted question, Am i going to have any problems putting an older column in my car? Is the splines on the rack the same? How does it come out? Any help would be great, this is like the only part i've never taken out in our cars lol....I'll have to head the the yard Monday, so any help is appreciated.

thanks!

There is 1 screw/bolt you back out attaching it to the actual rack...

You'll have to remove the whole dash I think and then there are 4 large bolts up top holding it to the inside of the car/ dash frame... lemme see if i can find a picture for you of my car gutted..

EDIT:

my wheel i chose..

Thanks Cody...That sorta sucks i just had my hole dash out less than 2 weeks ago lol....I want to try and do it without removing the lower dash, but i think it just might make the job easier if i take the half hour and remove the lower dash....I'll see whats involved i guess when i pull one from the junk yard

this is the wheel i went with...i know its a ractive...but its actualy a nice wheel, got it boxing day shopping for a decent price

Yea i don't remember whether or not you can get it out without removing the whole plastic one piece dash portion which covers everything. Reason being, the 2 front bolts on top can be remove with it in place, but the 2 further back which you can barely see in those pics I think are going to be the trouble makers.

You can see the holes under where the cluster is suppose to sit to remove the front bolts, but like I said the rear 2 I think are going to be the problem. I tore my car apart over a year ago and only have the 00+ Heater box and metal support frame in it as of right now for the pre-00 eco swap.

Also, IIRC the grant hub adapter are 5 holes but can't tell from the pic if there are 5 or 6 in yours. Are you doing the air bag simulator or just wiring in the 2.2ohm resistor?

Yea the grant is 5 bolt and my wheel is 6, but i got the grant 5 - 6bolt momo adaptor....they only carried grant, but they had the adaptor and everything in stock so i just grabbed it.....I don't know what I'll be doing yet, i was figuring the good old electrical tape covering the hole....haven't looked into it tho yet. suggestions?

I'm going to put the 2.2ohm resistor in the socket which shouldn't throw a light on if done correctly.

would that then allow the passanger bag to function?....

i'm throwing a light at the moment, i think i broke the clock spring last time i had it apart

Yep, passenger air bag will still be functional. Its just making the SDM module under the passenger seat "think" there is an airbag there. If you were to hit something, lets hope not, the system will still function like normal except you being the driver won't have yours.

thanks cody, i'll be looking into this then forsure, Do u know were i could buy air bag simulator? or suggest a place to buy a resistor?, what would you do just like wire it in like a loop i take it?

There is a company that sells a simulator for like $30 ish bucks, but some org member bought and it turned out to just be a resistor which can be bought at like radio shack for no more than pocket change.

All I am planning on doing is going to my local PNP and taking the opposite end of one of the connectors towards the steering wheel and making a "loop". Simply soldering in the 2.2ohm resistor and then heat shrinking it all together so if i ever sell the car down the road, I can pull my home made simulator plug out, and re-connect a steering wheel and airbag.

Pending on how many J's are there in the yard, I might snag a couple of these connectors and make some of these available for .org members so they can un-black tape their dash lights, lol..

I posted a lil while ago about steering wheel hub adapters and this issue on 03's. I bought one from momo which they said was sure to work. So i am extremely excited when my wheel and my hub adapter arrived. I remove my stock steering wheel and my airbag components. I then start to bolt down the hub adapter on my steering shaft. After bolting this on and putting the steering wheel on i go to turn the wheel and the whole thing starts to spin. I then realize that i have stripped off all the splines on my steering shaft. So the only way to fix this issue was to take a dremel and a drill and create two slots to drop keyway pins in to create to big splines. so if anyone feels brave enough to buy the 92-95 adapter and make splines yourself this is your best and cheapest way for an aftermarket steering wheel.

Or, you could take $40 and get a 95-02 column from your local yard and spend the 2-4 hours putting it in so its done properly/safe....... It was alot more simpler than it looked.

Cody, do u know what watt resistor to put in?, My buddies an electronics guy and can get that stuff, asked him for a 2.2ohm, and i believe he needed to know the watt? Something to do with the voltage passing or something

so you cant run any hub adaptor on any 03 to 05 right even the cavys unless you swap the column... because i have seen quite a few cavys that have different steering wheels and they didnt change the column out.

there's about a hundred threads on this.

for some reason, certain 03-05's have the older column, and somewhere in the 03 model year they swapped to the different size apparently.

i got the Momo hub and wheel on my 03 with no issues.

I am pretty sure the 1/2 watt resistor will work just fine.

I will try to back that up 100% though.

yes, Joey is right, 1/4 watt it is.

If the guys 03's that didn't work & the guys 03's that did work gave me your vin #'s I can look up your build dates and maybe we can narrow down the build dates of when this happened.

I just looked in the GM catalog and it doesn't have a build date range for steering columns '03-'05 So I guess if they ever got changed out from the dealer they would be changed to the new design. Leave it to GM to not leave sh*T alone!!!
