shortening my auto shifter

I read in the FAQ that you can simply cut the metal shifter stick with a simple saw. I was wondering if anyone had done this and if it works? If so, when you cut the tube do you only want to cut the outer tube or do you want to chop the white shift button piece as well? Please let me know thanks!

If you cut 1" off the outer tube, yuou need to cut 1 inch off the inner white/yellow stick for it to work correctly.

shorting the shifter on an auto makes the transition from park to drive about .003 seconds quicker.

Well having an auto I'd know...

The auto shifter sticks WAY the hell up, more than it needs to be, its like 6" from the base to the top. It would be nice looking, note, looking only, if it were shorter.

It also quickens the rev-in-park-then-slam-into-drive manuever, too.

I know how you feel, though. I used to have an auto Cav and wondered about shortening the shifter, but never got around to doing it before I sold it.

I could see shortening the manual . . .but the auto . . . Well, I guess when you have the s*its and you fly home and gotta jump out of your car quick, the extra .03 seconds helps a hell of a lot?

You guys need to get off this as a performance mod, this is an APPEARANCE mod, it does not have any basis in performance, and is WHY he asked in the INTERIOR forum.

Well i'm glad there are so many mature j-body enthusiasts on this site. I may be a newbie, but come on I know its an automatic tranny and my shortening my shifter will have no effect on the shifting itself. I simply wanted to shorten it because its a huge @!#$ didlo sticking up in the middle of my interior and I wanted to slim it down, but seeing as how so many of you just want to poke fun at my question, I suppose I'll have to look to others for tips on how to fix this problem.

Oh don't get your panties in a twist. The whole concept of shortening a shifter is mainly for performance-wise, hence people are looking at shortening an automatic of all things to be pointless. its a shifter, an automatic no less, so its going to be big. The whole thing of making an automatic look like a manual is just stupid to me, but thats my opinion. So calm down

Not in an auto. This is appearance only. Yes, shortening an auto shifter for performance is pointless, no it doesn't do anything, but when your shifter sticks up over 6" from the base, it really is just an eyesore in the interior and it is nice to shorten it. He wasn't asking if it was going to help with anything, or even implying it. He doesn't want to put a shift boot on it, he doesn't want to make it look like something its not, he just wants it shorter.

So do I. I wish I could give some more advice on how to do it, but I can't.

i was only joking. i know people who do it in manual cars just for the fact in the manual cavs it sits a little high and its uncomfortable on the wrist sometimes so thats why people do it.

as said, if you cut the outter metal tube off an inch, then you need to cut the inner piece an inch to match, becareful when your cutting the outer piece not to cut the inner piece.

its for appearance pourposes only its not about trying to fake like u have a manual its about getting rid of the foot long ugly shifter that came in our cars. there are hundreds of cars out there that came stock with boots on automatics its been done for years and just looks better then a metal shaft a doo doo shaped shifter they came with...

ITS FOR APPEARANCE ONLY! I dont know where you people are getting that I'm trying to add some kind of crazy performance mod with my auto shifter. If i'd put this in the performance forum I could see where all the jokes would come from, but this is the interior forum under SHOW AND SHINE meaning appearance modification, but ya know what I don't care about your little comments and I'm not going to bother with this thread anymore.

my advice is stop responding to the asses and just respond to those that help. getting into an arguement with an ass makes you just as guilty.

Just a tip for ya, man:

BEFORE you shorten this thing, make sure you put it into the LOWEST gear possible (all the way towards the trunk) and measure from the bottom of the knob to the lowest point on the shaft whre it would not hit your console. This would be the MAXIMUM inch amount you could take off the shaft.

Basically what I'm saying here is that if you had the car in park and make the shift knob sit as low as possible, you wouldn't be able to physically get it into 1st gear.

kinda like my interior?

i took out my center counsol, unbolted the shift assembly from the floor, and cut two inches off the top with a power saw. also cut two inches off the yellow center piece (the yellow piece allows you to shift back and fourth)

There are also two notches on the top of the shifter...when you take off the knob you will see what im talking about.

you must put those notches back into the newley cut shifter..

make sence?

if not hit me on AIM...
