Brian,
I have removed Sooo many of these. I will refer to the piece in question as the package tray. I have no idea if that's the proper term, but that's what I learned to call it at the shop I used to work at. The name sounds bogus to me, but that's what we called it.
There may be a post on this already, but here goes:
1. Remove all plastic hardware from the rear deck (should be 3 pieces on the top). (Go in from the sides, as they have side clips.)
2. Remove the 2 plastic retainers from the front face of the rear deck.
3. Remove the 2 trim panels you just took the retainers from. They are clipped in on the front outside sides to the large plastic pieces that take up the rear of the car. Use a srewdriver or Door Panel tool to loosen the clips. If you have problems or questions with this step, I can try to take a picture for you. Be careful not to break the clips.
At this point, you CAN remove the rear "package tray" (the part that's covered in fabric.) The only consideration is that you may crack the plastic trim pieces around the seat belt, as they are fragile. If you want, you could loosen or remove the large plastic pieces I was talking about in step 2 before continuing.
4. Slide both seatbelts underneath the package tray. Start at ONE end of the package tray, and gently pull bottom edge of the tray towards the inside of the car. This will allow you to pull the package tray forward on that side of the car. Keep pulling on that side until it's all the way out. Remember to hold up the tray as you pull it so it doesn't catch on the child seat mounts.
5. It should now be out!
As for cutting out holes for the 6X9's, I've been thinking about a way to do that too. It sounds much better! I may have a few more considerations than you do - I have child saftey belt mounts and a center 3-point belt in my 03 Cav. I can't remember if your 99 Cav is like this, but in my car, the factory holes for the 6X9's ARE NOT centered. (ie the left is farther from the center than the right.) There is room to work around this, although it may require some modification of the factory trim pieces in the rear deck, not to mention cutting up the metal rear deck and then recovering the package tray. Let me know if you do it!
Hope this is helpful.

very helpful....your a nice guy to help me out with that and stuff......tomorrow im gonna get my car from my grandpas and try this out....if i need somehelp what would be a good time to email you???do you have to work or anything.....also my spears are centered. i was thinking about just using a razor blade to cut the holes.....but! my current speakers are held in with some kind of "clips" you can see them when you get in the trunk and look up at the speakers....soooo idk if its like a brace that goes around the speaker or are part of the actual speaker. if they are part of the speaker how can i get these babys to stay down???i mean they have screw holes around them but idk about all that. when i get the car here tomorrow and u give me a good time to email you i will take pictures of the speakers if i need to and post them or send them to you....
btw its at my grandpas because he has a garage...and im 15 and only have my permit...thanks for the help!

SO EVERYTHING!
Brian, I took mine out and decided to do something a little custom. i took all the carpet off and applied some black vinyl. Keith is right on target with everything... I decided to try to cut holes. I was in the car for about 30 min trying to get exact measurements and it was still off. I decided to take off the old vinyl and add some more and here is what i have.
its a little muffled. I have decided on relocating them to the sides in the back seat like on the 95-99 convertibles. i have heard of people using a needle and poking small pinholes but i have yet to hear.
i wanted to drop a pair of polk momo 6x9's in my back deck but it turned out its not that easy (with these speakers anyway). the baskets were so massive that i had to enlarge the holes. not only that i had to move the location of the speakers because the new openings were going to interfere with the child retainers. i used a plasma cutter to make the new openings and then filed down the edges so the speakers wouldn't be scratched. it was a Very tight fit. turns out that one of the two bars that swung the trunk open was hitting one speaker, so i had to remove it. now my trunk doesn't open after i press the trunk release button. i couldn't find a solid screw location and i couldn't get a screwdriver or drill far enough back to put screws in near the rear window so i just put in zip ties. i know, not exactly a professional job, but the speakers sat SO tightly in the holes that i decided it was alright. the rear deck 'cloth' now sits a bit higher but it doesn't look ridiculous. the main reason i didn't cut openings in the cloth was because i didn't want them stolen. the sound is still very clear. good luck with your work. and well said 'Keith Williamson' about the entire process.
Blown.
Oh man! I just typed out a LONG reply with detailed instructions on doing the install, but I guess I waited too long to hit POST cause it didn't work and now it's gone!
Anyway, Brian - sorry I didn't reply. I was away for a day. Feel free to email me any time you want. Did you end up doing the install? I guess you probably figured out that you won't use the plastic clip-in holders with your new speakers. Just keep those with your factory 6X9's. Your new speakers should be bolted or screwed to the rear deck as tightly as possilbe.
As for having the speakers show, It's true that it may draw unwanted attention. But walking across the street can be dangerous too. No offense to sndsgood (Jason), who advised you against doing it - I respect your opinion. I am still considering doing this to make use of the wonderfully flat response curve of my Alpine Type-R 6X9's, and not to be showy in any way.
Let us know how it's going.

i havent done anything yet. i was just trying to find detailed instructions on how to get the thing out. now help me out im confused. when the cloth stuff and cover come out....does the part that im putting my speakers actually into out...because idk how im going to get a drill back there to drill screws to hold down the speakers. my window is to low. so it would be nice to know what was going on with that. also, should i cut the hole out set the speakers in (so they kinda go cover top of the covering) then screw them in. is that the way to do it?? help me out and let me know how to do this and stuff. thanks

ill let you know the steps i did when i had it almost out.
i pulled down my seat
removed the 4....3 inch long things that hold the part of the "deck" behind the seat in
then i removed the platic peices that are clipped on near the bottom of the seat on each side.
i slid the seat belts out.
cracked both the seat belt things that go aroud it.
put it all back in because i relized i would have to tear the side things off. (i need to know how to do that)
this was when i tried it the first time....once i know how to take the side things off im going to attemp it again. did i mention i could have my grandpa do this for me in about 3 seconds, he was worked on cavaliers for about 29 years? since the first one ever was made. its just i wanna try and get this done by my self and i dont know what his reaction would be to me cutting the spot for the speakers on. lol so im depending on your guys help here. and thanks keith for all your help!

all you had to do was make the deck start to bow up like an upside down U and pull it out. the little plastic things in the seat belt holes are bound to crack no matter what.

Get ready for a long post!
Brian,
You were only one step from finishing if you had those side pieces out (the ones that you removed the clips from.) Don't worry about cracking those pieces. They are behind the seats and are rarely seen. Super glue them together if it makes you feel better. It will work. I've never bowed the package tray myself, but if it works, go for it. Here's my method: Do all those steps again, and then
Quote:
Start at ONE end of the package tray, and gently pull bottom edge of the tray towards the inside of the car. This will allow you to pull the package tray forward on that side of the car. Keep pulling on that side until it's all the way out. Remember to hold up the tray as you pull it so it doesn't catch on the child seat mounts.
If that doesn't help, I'll try to explain it a little more clearly. The package tray has slits for the seatbelts, right? Choose a side - right or left. Let's say you chose the right. Take the short piece of the tray that is bent down and covers the face of the deck (on the right of the seatbelt slit) and pull it towards the inside of the car so that the front edge of the tray comes out from underneath the large plastic pieces that are there. Now pull the entire right side of the package tray towards the inside of the car and it will pivot out. Remember that it may catch on the child safety mounts as you slide it forward. Just lift it up if it does.
Mounting the speakers: you will be drilling holes directly into the metal of the rear deck to secure the speakers down. Do not use the factory plastic clip-in holders - they won't fit the new speakers anyway. This does require a bit of effort. If you're not entirely comfortable with it, you could ask your grandfather for help with this part. So far nothing yet involves cutting up the package tray.
As far as drilling holes, there are a couple of ways to do it. The easiest is to use the paper or cardboard template that came with your new speakers. If you don't have one, you can make one by tracing the speaker (upside down) onto a piece of paper and marking the mounting holes onto it. The drilling will be done from INSIDE the trunk, not down from the top. As you have noticed there is no room for that unless you have an angle drill attachment. Mount the template with tape to the inside of the rear deck. Make sure it's lined up properly to the factory speaker hole. You can shine a light down through the hole if you need to so you can be sure. Mark the mounting hole locations on the deck by scratching them into the metal with a sharp object, or using a china marker/grease pencil. Do the same for the other speaker hole. Now get a drill and drill bit - make sure your bit is slightly smaller than the screws for the speakers. Usually a 1/8" bit is fine. Drill the holes from inside the trunk.
Now test fit your speakers. Do they sit down all the way onto the rear deck? Do the holes line up reasonably well?
If they don't sit down all the way, you can either use a spacer to raise them up a bit, or enlarge the hole (or both). If the holes don't line up, well then either your template is off or you weren't careful enought when you drilled them. Drill new holes as necessary.
You can now wire up the speakers and put everything back. That will be the complete install without cutting up the package tray.
To cut holes in the package tray requires more effort. Make sure you have the proper hardware (screws/bolts, etc.) for the grills. This step is IMPORTANT: With the package tray out, use the holes you have already drilled for the speakers and line up the speaker grills on top of the rear deck. Then place the child safety mount trim pieces in place and make sure they don't overlap the grills! IF they do, you will not be able to do this without modifying (ie cutting) the trim pieces. Stop now unless you are comfortable doing that. IF they don't overlap, go ahead to the next step.
The holes in the tray need to be big enough to fit the new speakers and grills, BUT the package tray sits higher than the rear deck, so you will want your material to be longer than the hole you cut. How do you do this?
Start by putting the package tray back in its place and tracing the speaker hole onto the bottom of it from inside the trunk. Now take it out of the car again. Cut a small hole (right through the fabric and all) out of the centre of each speaker hole. This will give you room to skin back the fabric. Determine how big of a hole you will be cutting out so that the grill fits. (Put the grill onto the bottom of the package tray and trace it so you have another, larger hole marked. You should cut about 1/4" larger than this hole when you get to that step.) Skin back the fabric at least 1" (OK Canadians use inches too!) past the spot you will be cutting. Use a thin plastic tool (like a putty knife or something, but not too sharp). Once that's done, cut the board part of the package tray to fit the speaker grill. Scoring the board with a utility knife will work best. Make sure it's not a jagged cut, because it will show. DO NOT cut through the material! Use your fingers to make sure you keep the fabric out of the way for this cut. Now install the package tray in the car and reinstall the speakers. You will have to trim some of the fabric, but not all of it. Leave enough material so that at least 1/4" of it will sit under the speaker at the deck level. If you do end up cutting the material a little short, relax - it stretches. Skin it back a little more if necessary and stretch it. Install the speakers with the grills and you're done! Well, you may need to enlarge the mounting holes if using the grills requires using bolts rather than screws. And THEN you're done!
Alot of this is what I tried to post last time. As you can see, it is a fairly big project if you've never done this sort of thing before. I used to install sunroofs, and I learned alot of this from working with headliners. If you're not comfortable with it, try to find someone who is to help you out.
OK I think that's all of it. Have fun!

well here is what i did with mine and i liked it...looked very custom...
Mind you the speaker grills arent on but when they were it looked alot better..phil
are the speaker grills u guys are talking about the one that comes on the stock ones? and also when u talk about screwing from the trunk into my speaker holes...wont you see the tips of the screws coming out? i guess im a little confused there.

Well i made mdf rings for mine and had to cut out the metal below a bit... then just screwed the rings on from the bottom and screwed the speakers into the rings..not that hard at all..phil
Phil has an easier way to deal with the height difference between the metal deck and the package tray. My way gives a more sculpted look, but it takes more time. Good idea, Phil!
The speaker grills we are talking about should have come with the new speakers. There are no grills with the stock ones.
You won't see the screws coming out because you are only going to DRILL from inside the trunk to make the mounting holes. Make sure the speaker is out for this step. The screws will be screwed in from the top when you install the speaker. You may need a short screwdriver to get the back ones in. But if you use Phil's method, you avoid some of that hassle.

How come nobody has talked about the flip down part of the back seat. Don't you have to takw the back of the seat to get the side parts out. This is where I'm stuck. I unbloted the seat belt, both on the top and the bottom. Then I took out the plastic clip on the passanger side and slid the seat back over and it popped out on the driverside. I was then able to get the driver side panel out of the car. The thing is the seat doesn't come out on the passenger side as it does on the driver side. So I can't get the passenger side panel out. I need to to see what clip feel out of place. I got the rear deck out even with the passenger side still in. How do you get the other side of the seat back out?
hey, i did it and its awesome. i just cut out the the cardboard part with the holes so they would have room to go in...they stick up because they are 3 ways. my grandpa ended up helping me which was awesome. he got it out like nothing. we also painted my mirrors today so thats cool. thanks to everyone who helped. especailly keith!

Your seat isn't coming down? It sounds stuck. Not sure what to tell you other than try somehow to get the clasp to let go of the seat.

No No the seat is down and the driver side is out but I can't get the passenger side out in order to take the whole seat back out of the car.
Brian that looks great I think I will end up doing the same as you. I wanted to do a fiber glass job, but I have my hands full with the subs.
you don't need to take the back seat out, period! just fold it down. take the seat belts out from the holes on the rear deck. pull all the tabs out across the opening to the trunk. pull those two plastic pieces on the sides of the trunk opening out. then you grab the deck lid cover and push one side back and pull the other side foward. you may have to push the sides together to to get a slight bow in the rear deck cover to get it out. then just pull it out and your done.
