Im pretty interested to see how this turns out... I have 3 of the isuzu trannys in the garage that need worked on.

On a side note, since it seems that there are a lot of people working in the Isuzu trans, is there an actual service manual for the 95-99 transmission?
Ive searched but came up with nothing.

Nice find Gary, that would have been helpfull the first time I had one apart, lol. Do you have any advice for switching to the 2.2 OHV 3rd and 4th gears? You're one of the few I know that have done it, and I was just wondering if you ran into any snags.

The one piece synchros showed up yesterday, but I've been in a haze from alergies, lack of sleep and antihistamine overdose, so I haven't had a chance to measure them, lol.

They look promising though, and I should be able to compare measurements tonight.

If I don't take a Claritin D every day I go into barely functioning mode... Probably from all the epoxy resins and crap I work with.

Gear wise,it was pretty easy. You'll need access to a press to get the gears off and on. You can probably go back in the archive posts and look up some of the stuff Brian (Speedracer) and I posted back and forth to see some of the minor quirks we ran across. Seems to me one of the big things was 3 dowel pins that lock in between the shift shafts, just have to keep them in the right order or your screwed. Just take your time and some notes and you'll be fine. I'd rate it a 7 on a scale of 1-10 if you have fairly good mechanical and reasoning skills.

Alright so I've got good news and bad news, and some decisions to make. I went out and pressed the Geo Storm input shaft apart to look at the synchros and calculate the gear ratios. The good news is the Geo tranny I have has 1 piece synchros, which I've discovered is a necessity for switching to 1 piece synchros. This is because the race that they synchros run on are different from the 1 piece synchros to the 3 piece synchros.

The gear on the left uses 3 piece synchros, and it's from a 2.4 isuzu, the gear on the right uses 1 piece synchros and is from the Geo Storm tranny. The 3 piece synchro race is a smaller diameter than the 1 piece synchro race. It looks to me like the race was pressed on the gear, but I cant seem to get it off, and I REALLY don't want to break it.

The three piece synchro

Both synchros installed

Luckly first gear is identical from the 2.4 to the Geo Storm (see gear ratios below), so I don't need to pull that race off, I can just use the whole gear. However second gear is slightly taller 2.043 instead of the 2.18 I was planning on using. So I'm at a bit of a crossroads, do I attempt to remove the race, do I just run the higher gear which will probably slightly hurt my 1/4 mile times but possibly gain reliability, or do I say screw it and send the synchros back and order 3 piece synchros... hmmm...

My other thought was that I could bring the gear to work, stick it in cryo (assuming my boss would go for it), freeze the hell out of it and try to get the race off. I thought about heating it up but I don't want to risk warping it.

My weird ass Geo Storm Tranny
1st - 3.727 - 41/11
2nd - 2.043 - 47/23
3rd - 1.333 - 40/30
4th - 0.923 - 36/39
5th - 0.744 - 32/43
FDR - 3.579 - 68/19

2.4L Engine
96-99 - Isuzu 5 speed
1st - 3.73
2nd - 2.18
3rd - 1.33 40/30
4th - 0.92 35/39
5th - 0.74
FDR - 3.94

I ran through some more calculations and it looks like my max speed at 6250rpm in second with my 2.4, 2.18 gear is about 51.9mph. That seems low so I'm going to assume the equation I used isn't the best, but it will still work well for comparing ratios.

The max speed at 6250rpm in second with the Geo Storm 2.043 gear would be 55.4, so about a 3.5mph difference. Maybe I should just take the small hit for now, and enjoy being able to stay in second that much longer, and making the 2nd to 3rd gear shift that much closer together. With W41 cams it could possibly be a really nice setup. Hmmm....

Oh, and here's the equation I used...

mph = (rpm * cir) / (gear * final * 88)

where rpm = engine rpm
cir = tire circumference, in feet
gear = gear ratio of your car
final = final drive ratio of your car
88 = combines several conversion factors

huh? so the only gear thats different is 2nd?

i thought the 3rd and 4th were...

180hp in 1989 or 145hp in 2002, you decide. >

Weird right? I've tripple checked all the ratios, and it doesn't match anything I've ever seen posted. Plus it has a crazy low FDR, which I'm sure the 400+hp guys would love to get their hands on.

Are you sure it's not from a Geo Prizm maybe. 3rd,4th,and 5th are pretty odd for a Storm. Final drive is right for a base Storm or Hatch (Wagon)...

I'm not sure of anything with the Storm tranny, I found it on car-part.com and drove down into the southern tier of NY, down about 10 miles of dirt roads and got to a junkyard in the middle of no where. The tranny had about a 1/4 of dust on it, but it looked like an Isuzu, and for $80 I couldn't complain, haha.

It was advertised as a 93 Geo Storm tranny, and I believe it was advertised as the DOHC version, which it obviously isn't. Either way I'm just happy the diff will work and it has one piece synchros.

Speaking of which, I have the 2nd gear from each tranny soaking in a 50/50 mix of ATF and Acetone, now I just need to find a can of PC Duster so I can try to freeze the gear and pull the races off.

Well I got the race off of the 2.4 gear, but it wasn't pretty, and it was much harder on the gear and race than I wanted it to be. I used a propane torch since it's cooler than an oxy torch, but it still got the gear and race hot enough to blue, and I saw a bit of orange in the race right when it finally came off. So I'm worried I might have compromised the temper.

The 2.4 gear, synchro and race

The Geo gear, synchro and race

So this has me worried that I'll junk the other race, the one that I'm planning on using, not to mention I gored the gear up in the vice a bit. Thankfully I have another 2nd gear in the mail on it's way to my house, so I might give it another try, but I'm beginning to think I should just use the higher 2nd gear to save myself any real trouble, and the possibility of scrapping an expensive part. I'm going to do a runout on the race tomorrow, but I'm already pretty sure it isn't flat anymore, it's off by somewhere around .003-.005".

The one thing I just thought of though, is that the race I want to use is much bulkier, and therefore stronger, so it would be able to take more of a beating without bending. I'm gonna go talk to a few mechanics, and see what their take on it is. I wonder if I can buy a new race from GM?

Ok that's Fing awesome....

I was also given this link: http://www.bgsoflex.com/auto.html

But that spread sheet is sweet, did you make that?

In other news, I've pretty much decided to just use the very slightly higher gear so save myself any real problems, I'd rather have synchros that last longer than a year, and deal with a very slightly slower second gear. I'll probably assemble my input and output shafts this weekend with my final ratio choices, and to make sure the 1 piece synchros are going to go together just right
