Walbro Fuel Pump Instillation with Pics

ok well this weekend i finally decided to install my walbro fuel pump.

Pump number: GSS340M
From: http://www.autoperformanceengineering.com/

When you order it ,tell them that you are putting it on a cavalier. and to send a installing kit, which costs $15 (give or take).

you need the o ring, a new accordion looking tube, or you can use the stock one if you don't mess it up.
the wire connector.
clamps
and the filter. (white sock)

To drop the fuel tank, you just need some disconnect tools for the fuel lines. Re-leave the fuel pressure before u do them, it makes it easier and less messy.

Once you have the tank out, and the fuel module out. the "cup" looks like this.....
<img src=http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/9/web/333000-333999/333391_94_full.jpg>
<img src=http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/9/web/333000-333999/333391_86_full.jpg>
<img src=http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/9/web/333000-333999/333391_87_full.jpg>

You need to modify the cup so that the pump gets fuel.

For all the people who had trouble under a 1/4 a tank of gas. this is what you do.
<img src=http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/9/web/333000-333999/333391_88_full.jpg>
<img src=http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/9/web/333000-333999/333391_89_full.jpg>
<img src=http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/9/web/333000-333999/333391_92_full.jpg>

You can see how much i cut. basically the whole bottom. You do know need the plastic tube that is inside the module, or the little yellow thing.

Make sure to have the accordion tubes on all the way. and clamp them down.

Also, you can see how the connector was plug and plug, no cutting or anything required.
<img src=http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/9/web/333000-333999/333391_90_full.jpg>
<img src=http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/9/web/333000-333999/333391_91_full.jpg>

Make sure you have the fuel pump all the way down. You use the stock rubber cup thing that the stock fuel pump was in. its hard to get down into the hole, so lube it up some. and it will go down.

Also the tube was hard to get on, did the same thing. I also made a small slit on either end of the tube, to get them to stretch over the nipple type things. Only do that if you cant get it on, otherwise you might cut too much, and have to get a new tube.

I think that is all there was to it. Put the fuel tank back in, and disconnect the lines.

When i started the car i had less then 1/4 a tank of gas and it started perfect. I primed the pump three times just to makes sure. And i bypassed my msd inline.

I drove it around, the car feels so much better. My egts are 200 degrees lower, and my car doesn't have a hesitating feel, like it did with the msd inline.

Huge thanks to Nick, Changeforabutton. He basically walked me through a ton of it. Especially the cutting and what not. <br>

Great post Alex! I know I have wanted to get rid of my inline pump for a while now!! That's great that the car seems to run better now, I'm sure this will help out a lot of people.

Is this the same flow rate as the GM 4.3 Liter pump? I know that that one you have is a walbro but which do you think would be better? Here is what our cars flow compared to the GM 4.3 hybrid pump

Stock pump - Free Flows 80psi@28gph (gallons per hour)
Operating Flow - 45psi@20gph

New Pump - Free Flows 100psi@47gph
Operating Flow - 51psi@41gph

im not sure, on that site it has a flow chart.

not too sure about it. but at 12 volts, the operating flow (i believe) at 50psi@54gph.

but the pump itself is the "high pressure" 225ltr/hr pump.

which in gallons is 59.445 <br>

oh and the instilation kit comes with a= o ring, electrical connector, rubber fuel line (not used), clamps, some rubber thing, the sock filter. and i think that is it

when i ordered it, the guy said that if i let him know what i used and what i didnt use, that he would make a kit for the cavalier/sunfire. so i need to email him. <br>

High-Pressure 255 ltr/hr pump it says.Not 225, and how are you controlling the flow? Do you just have a fmu or are you also running a FPR to control the flow on idle? I have a 2.4 and I think that pump will for sure flow enough for my car let alone your 2.2. It actually might be overkill. just and opinion. very nice detailed intstructions buy the way, thankyou. <br>

im using a cartech fmu, but an switching to extra injectors. <br>

Alex,

Was your MSD inline getting really hot?? The first pump I got was bad and got super hot. It also didnt make much noise, which I thought was strange because everyone complains about them, so I unhooked it and just used my stock pump for a bit. I finally sent it back and got a new one. Then it ran nice and cool and was super loud. The car ran way better after this was working too. I wonder if your inline is defective in some way?? Just a thought.

Later,

Dan

dan im thinking mine is defective. It made lots of noise, but it would get hot ot the touch.

And also, when i would take the vacuum off my cartech, the pump would sound like it almost turned off. <br>

Hey the stock pump has the 2 way plug the Accordion looking thingy and the little black line going into the housing.

What do you do with that thing because the 3270 doesn't have the outlet for that little line,

your welcome.

Something i noticed today, is that yesterday when i got it done, i only drove it for a couple minutes.

today i drove it around to see if it was all ok, and my car acted like it would stall if i wasnt accerarating at all. and when i did try giving it gas, it would act like it would stall unless i gave it a lot.

the reason being, that i just thought of after messing with the car for a little, was that i had air in the lines, which would make it run reallly bad. so i let it idle for a while and what not.

now it runs perfect, no problems at all. so just dont forget that air can definitly get in the lines, which will make it run bad until it passes them all out.

if im wrong on my thinking, correct me, but i think i got it. <br>

I just went to that website. I can't believe the small price for that pump. That's great. I will call them this payday and get one. Dropped my tank once to replace the whole unit from GM before I started setting up my motor. A big difference from a $300 stock unit! Your pics brought back memories!

Need to do like the hondas and put in a door to get to the sending unit under the rear seat. I might just do that this install. Cut out the hole (with the tank dropped) and make a new cover from a piece of sheet metal. Line the tank around the "hole" area with foam gasket tape to make a seal so dirt won't collect around the door and use some velcro to hold the plate down. Sounds like a plan! I love my imagination! Just made that up!
