I basically have two situations I'm looking to resolve.
1) I have obtained the following rather popular aftermarket projector set:
The LED and "angel eye" lights are all on separate runs of wire that came loose and ready for creative wiring. Did these come with any particular suggestion for installation? Do people typically have these accessory lights on with the low beams? With ACC power? Run and switched in the cabin separately? I realize the easy answer is personal preference, but I wondered if there was a "normal" way to handling them.
2) I've been so impressed with the stock light pattern and cutoff for these that I have ordered a set of HIDs to try in the low beams. They will be on a relay. Seeing as it's better to leave the HIDs on anyways, I thought it would be nice to make a mod to keep the low beams on with the high beams at the same time. I did a quick search and found limited information -- mostly with the conclusion that it would melt the harness. Seeing as the HIDs would be on a relay and the harness would not be taxed, I thought it would be worth a shot.
I have only about enough electronics knowledge to try and injure myself. My only game plan so far involved tapping the high-beam circuit, and running it over to the low beam relay to keep it on in both modes. I'd add a couple of diodes to keep the current from backfeeding (low beam trying to light the high beam as well). The relay should demand minimal power, allowing the high beams to function normally. At least, this seemed simple enough in my head.
Any thoughts appreciated.

Question 1) From what I've seen, the typical install is to tap off the parking lights for the angel eyes and LED's
Question (situation) 2) If you relay the HID's the only tax that is placed on the stock part of the harness is that load needed to trip the relay. Seeing how a relay draws very little, melting should not occur in the stock harness.
The halo's and LED's I have wired into my parking lights.
and here's how to do the hi's with low's mod
its on a malibu but MOST 95-99 cavy's have the same color wires for the headlights.

Minor follow-up -- I was just thinking that the parking lights flash in alternating time with the turn signals. Doesn't flashing the halos look kind of gay? I think I'll make an administrative decision and put them on with the low beams.

I used the bumper lights tapped into the running light NOT the blinking.

Call me slow, but this has me confused. It might be a terminology thing. It seems to me that both of the (stock orange) lights on the front of my car blink alternatingly with the turn flasher.

Thanks -- I think I'm starting to get the picture. This works because all the bulbs are switched-ground, right? The brown wire would be +12V regardless of the blinking?

Right. The bumper/front side marker lights operate off a switched ground (12v+ from the aforementioned park wire which is only 12v+ when the park lights are on, the turn sig wire at the 3157 - blue or green depending on side - is the ground, that is why they alternate. The turn sig and park operate off a switched positive. That's a fairly standard wiring configuration across most different makes and models.
In a most amazing turn of events, I managed not to screw this up.
That Mulibu lo+hi beam headlight mod worked flawlessly on the first go, with no adjustments required. The only revision required for my 97 Cavalier was that the High-beam constant 12V wire was BLUE instead of orange. The rest went smoothly.
And thanks again gentlemen for pointing me toward the brown wire for the turn signal/park light bulb. Needless to say nothing else could have been much more appropriate or easier to access.

Notice the crescent-shape effect on the ground that leaves an enormous dead spot directly in front of the car.

The angel eyes are more obvious than this poor photo lets on. I changed out the 194 marker/turn lights for for orange bulbs.
Finally, let me say that quick-splice connectors are the best things since sliced bread.

They have some that are gel filled (or just put a little silicon grease in there) for external applications. Granted they are not the preferred method, but work for what they are designed to do.
Go borrow grandpas soldering iron
buy some solder (you were already out buying scotch locks so you have no excuse) $5
buy some tape $0.50
never worry about scotch locks (inevitably) failing.
I suppose that I had that response coming. Also suppose it's no consolation that they were covered in electrical tape too.
I PROMISE I will replace them with solder when I have everything apart again this coming week to install HIDs. I got lazy when it came to having so many wires to tap.

it's really not so bad, just strip and attach all your wires first and do all your soldering at once.
On a related note, I wish Canadian Tire stores didn't rape people so bad on the price of heat shrink. Last time I needed some it was nearly a dollar per usable piece, when purchased in a multi-pack.

I've never seen a whole lot of reason to go with shrink, especially with the price of heat guns on top. Loom looks fine to me.

Only that a properly guaged piece of shrink and a quick shot from the open flame of a lighter goes a long way toward keeping a soldered connection protected. No need for a heat gun. I've always thought loom was more of an aesthetic touch, rather than a protective layer. I suppose it's both to some extent.

its been a while since i looked at them but i could have swore that my headlights said DO NOT use HIDs in the headlights.

They do say that and that's for legality since technically HID's in cars not factory equipped with them are illegal. Basically its them just covering their asses, kinda the same way alot of fog lights say "for off-road use only"
