is this a "mentally challenged" box design
Tuesday, October 30, 2007 5:13 PM
for whatever reason I was trying to think up a decent design for a box in my vert to be replaced over the winter and am really interested in going with a bandpass design over the small sealed box I am currently using.

so here is the potentially short bus riding design

what I am looking for is mostly SQ with depth.
i am running a single 10" type r 4ohmDVC sub and an xtant x1001 mono block at ~800watts give or take 20 at 2 ohms
I also want to comfortably be able to fire towards the rear of the trunk without having to worry aboot puncturing a sub, yeah i want it all.

I have read many debates on what is best and the various opinions as to why, I can build a ported box and after checking my math a recockulous amount of times tune it where i am happy with the sound but have yet to throw my hand in on bandpass enclosures.

anyone that wants to help me design a box would be appreciated and i would like to keep it under 2.5 ft^3 total if possible

TIA

Not mentally challenged, but different. Can't see wht it wouldn't work. How did you draw that up?

how do you get the sub in/out?

I'm guessin you build a ported box around the sealed box..

top of the box would be the last part to go on, and yes it is basicly a large u-shaped port wrapping around a sealed box, i really want to do it now that the car is pretty much up for the winter, i guess i could put a thick plexi or lexan "window" opposite the sub in the back wall that I could remove and squeeze the sub out but I really don't care aboot getting it out and if it doesn't work oh well, i don't need the box then anyways.

i guess i just wanted to know if anyone knew for sure that it would be a waste of time and good supplies, seems like the best way to go and still protect the sub from cargo.

BTW that is my uber sweer MS paint skillz, just figured out the dimensions on paper that i wanted to work with and just threw it down in paint real quick

OH okay, I see it now. If it's tuned right it should be alright.

Looks like some sort of 4th order bandpass. Hope those dimensions are right or else your box will sound like marion berry smacking a gerbil off of a table full of white powder.

that's what i'm looking for, i would love to have some dimensions thrown my way or at least some assistance in where i might be able to find it.

been hunting through ROE but i am not looking to wall it, but i am getting some ideas for the burb though

Lanman is right. 4th order boxes are difficult to tune correctly. The area in front of the subs is the vented portion and will almost certainly have to be much larger than what is in your drawing. The side ports will probably have to be much thinner as well. I'd suggest putting a hinged door (sealed with weather stripping) on the top wall to allow you to change drivers if need be.

is there a box calculating program that i can get my hands on for bandpass enclosures or is just all trial and error.

WinISD should do it for you. These things are VERY sensitive to error, so you have to know your sub's displacement as well as port displacement.

Exactly. One nice thing about a 4th order is it'll have a low cutoff and a high cutoff; the enclosure acts as if you had crossovers and a subsonic filter. But done wrong, it may peak at the wrong frequency and sound real funky, or not have the output you want.
