N-body IRS swap
Saturday, April 16, 2005 3:21 PM
Ok.. it's almost time... I've now confirmed that the strut towers are identical between J-cars and N-cars.. because I've found a couple of N-car owners that installed J-car bars on them

So... it comes down to getting my hands on an Alero IRS.. (with rear discs, again, hurray!) which might come thru this coming week. Then.. I have the issue of lowering it.. since I know @!#$ all about N-cars... but I do know the rear strut is totally different than the ones I have on my Cavalier... so...

I registered on N-body.net.. but their stupid phpbb forum software SUCKS and didn't send me a registration email... so I can't get in

I'm trying to figure out where to get a good rear sway bar upgrade for the N-car.. and find a set of rear Koni reds.. assuming that my Eibach Pro-Kit springs will work (the rear springs look darn similar.. not sure tho)

Or maybe if I'm lucky I'll find a rear set of springs and Konis... yeah.. right...

Heh... no God speak in my threads, ok? I don't believe (see WAR forum )

rofl

I guess I'll have to research what people use with Eibach Prokits on the N-body then... because if there are no Konis available... I'll need SOME sort of strut to make it work. I'm not interested in spending $1,500 on two struts. I'm not interested in coilovers either.

But thanks for the link

john a good thing for struts would be the g/p jim has setup , providing it goes through

because the way they are set up , according to dave weshould be able to get a extra set of the front spindle mount , and use it in the rear

thats what my plan is any way

and if i remember correctly , the GM guys said they used the J-springs on the g/a rear struts

Lenko...

how are you getting around the bolt pattern issue? upping the J's to 5x115 or did you find a hub/rotor to work for the rear at 5x100?

i thought the nbody had a 5x114.3 lug pattern.....

if thats the case, then it shouldnt be a problem. most of the aftermarket wheels come with 5x100 and 5x114.3 lug holes on em, so he can still use the same rims!

you can find shops that will redrill the holes in the correct pattern

let me rephrase this...

If you are attempting to keep your car a sleeper (I.E stock rims)

will you be able to retrofit a 5x100 rear hub to it without too much work

OR

will will you have to deal with 5x100 in the front and 5x115 in the back (0.7 mm would be taken up by the tolerance in the holes in the rim--that's under 0.03"--and i was under the impression that the standard bolt patterns were 5x100 and 5x115)

OR

is there a way to retrofit the front steering knucle with a 5x115 hub?

I ask because if i'm going to do this mod, i'd either want to keep my stock rims for sleeper purposes, or use a stock rim that *looks* similar enough to a stock SFGT rim to not rouse comment--a rim used on the late-90's Grand Prix GT's fit the bill (I think they're also on the Aztek).

just get them redrilled , its alot easier

you can swap the front assembly including the larger front brakes , but you gotta swap the outter cv joint also

and you would have to use the 99-up rims from the ga

Re: N-body IRS swap

shouldn't have to...

I could use the same axles used on the 00 GA since the tranny/diff was the same.

and i'd just need rims with a similar look/offset. Why go through the trouble of having those redrilled when the stock GT rims would look like utter ass if i did it?

The grand am's are wider, so I would assume the axles are longer on the N-bodies..... but I would have to check the part numbers to make sure.....

I am swapping to the front grand am spindles, and rear IRS...... giving me a 5x115 all the way around (most imports, IE: Eclipse, are 5x114.3)

idk if 5x114.3 rims will fit on 5x115 hubs......

john....look up changeforabutton (nick aiello), he has his IRS either done, or really close....He used his J springs on the rear...he is just using the 5x114.3 lug pattern. All he has left if getting the trailing arms cut/re-welded if I remember right.

99 and up grand am wheels have a 5x115 bolt pattern, 99 and less are 5x100
