i been doing some searching on headers and i kno a 4 2 1 headers gives more low end and a 4 1 gives top end im looking for people that have some experience with both types of headers if anybody can tell me which is prefered or which is more efficient i just want some pointers on both types of headers please if ya dont mind
4-1 will be prone to leak more. HONESTLY, the 4-2-1/4-1 is gonna be the same for you... depending how extensive you go with the mods. but either one is gonna work out well for you!
so what do you recommend?
4-1 long tube with a merge collector.
4-2-1..loosing low end torque has happened to me so far but I got great top end. Having a decent power band through out is good. Even with my 421, the car is only fun to drive 5 k rpm and up. Got new mods and need a retune. Im hoping to get some low to mid range torque back!

so a 4 1 header would make a better power band through the rpms?

4-1 makes best power over 4-2-1 on top end.
Pacesetter would be a good value choice.

oh cool well i think ill go with the 4-1 header then i appreciate the advice!!
Exactly..its however you want to build it. I want great top end with good low end as well. One reason I stepped up to 2.5 inch exhaust

oh cool can i get some advice on exhaust? like what size or brand name is good?

bought my header from turbotech a few years ago, excellent company to deal with. i would recommend the ceramic header, the painted will rust a lot faster. the ceramic unit also tends to keep more heat in the pipe which helps more with scavenging. would buy from them again without hesitation

also i was curious i see some headers are more expensive than others what makes it like that? like whats the difference between a cheap headers and an expensive header?

quality of material, R&D, and fitment. seriously, go with the ceramic pacesetter, it's the best bang/buck out there for a j-body header.

I would have to agree, the pacesetter 4-1 ceramic coated header is a great one,I have had mine for 5 years now,and its still looking and working great..
And I would not worrie about losing low end tq,The Jbody first gear is already geared low enough you wont notice a big diff...

how is a 4-1 prone to leak more? it's less connections than a 4-2-1

my carDomain updated 6/11/10 Forged and Supercharged
my pacestter 4-1 header works great and hasnt leaked in almost 2 years
RIP JESSE GERARD.....Youll always be in my thoughts and prayers...
I just switched from Rksports ceramic 4-2-1 tsudo SS 4-2-1. My ceramic lasted years but I like the look of SS. With my current build, I would not be liking the 4-1 down low. The 2.5 inch system I just put in gave me more power down low end and increased my top end. I can tell the difference.

its all speculation anyway... until someone shows up with DYNO proven results on an EXACT copy of your drivetrain setup its all guess and test.
what works on one engine platform doesnt nessesarily mean that it goes for all.
AHHHHHHHHH so much wrongness in this thread.
1. 4-2-1 is more likely to leak than 4-1 because of the extra flange.
2. Typically a long tube 4-1 will make better peak power, but a 4-2-1 will have a broader power band.
3. There is no such thing as a properly designed 4-2-1 header for the J-body, it would need to connect the 1 and 4 cylinders and the 2 and 3 cylinders
4. A properly designed and custom 4-2 1 header will even make more peak power than a 4-1 header, of course that is from an article by a master header builder who specializes in 4-2-1 headers (still makes 4-1 headers if the customer wants it).
I think thats covers everything.

This^ except for the bill and stans header for the 2.4 does connect the 1w/ 4 and 2w/3. None exist for the eco like that.
