YOUR high flow cat & resonator preferance?!
Saturday, June 06, 2009 2:44 PM
Am looking to finish my exhaust system. Running things like this:
Pacesetter header ---> Catco high flow cat ---> 2.5 magnaflow catback ---> 18" glasspack resonator.

If that setup is going to be raspy, (other than running a longer resonator) will a different brand high flow cat or resonator make a difference???

Thanks in advance!

Fixed. That should reduce the rasp decently.

Personally i would use a longer resonator, because i absolutely hate rasp.

And I fixed that for you, that would eliminate any rasp at all lol.

Seriously though, I would put the longest res you could fit under there right after the cat. Also if you wanted to change the muffler(Ive never been a fan of magnaflow) super turbo mufflers would be quieter, and something like a dynomax unltraflow would be deeper and every setup Ive heard with this muffler wasnt raspy at all.

am not looking for amazing results as my car will only get bolt ons for a while. two questions:
1. can i just get a "universal" magnaflow high flow cat
2. can i run a SECOND resonator further down the piping?

Replied to your pm

Yes a universal magnaflow cat will work, just get the correct sixe piping you need. If its going on the end of your pacesetter youll need the 2.25" unless you have a custom dp made for your header.

Yes you can add a second res but one longer one would be better and more cost efficient.

I have often thought of installing a system that uses the longest glass-pack possible between the cat & muffler on my ride, with the addition of a resonator tip, to see how quiet I could get it's note. Money keeps me from exploring it, but I can assuredly say that a 22" Cherrybomb & Dynomax Super-turbo do the job very well. Nice deep burble w/o a hint of raspiness. A pleasure to the ears at all times... Even when rollin' down the highway for long periods.

Go beyond the "bolt-on".

Atomic Turbo Header, .63 a/r turbo(soon to be .82 a/r), 3" downpipe, flexpipe, this resonator

Here's my research if I were to piece together the whole setup:

1st CHOICE!
Aluminized Cat back tubing (CTI)
Not stainless steel?
______________________________________________________________________________________________

1st CHOICE!
Magnaflow Universal Cat
In/Out: 2.5''
______________________________________________________________________________________________

1st CHOICE!
Glasspack Muffler Cherry Bomb
In/Out: 2.5"
Body Length: 26"

.....................OR.....................

Dynomax Thrush Magnum Glasspack Mufflers Stainless Steel
In/Out: 2.5''
Body Length: 28''
______________________________________________________________________________________________

Dynomax Super Turbo Muffler
In/Out: 2.5''

.....................OR.....................

1st CHOICE!
Vibrant Universal Muffler - StreetPower 1040

Inlet: 2.5"

.....................OR.....................

Vibrant Universal Muffler - StreetPower 1034
Inlet: 2.5"

.....................OR.....................

Vibrant Performance Stainless Steel Muffler (eBay)
In/Out: 2.25"/2-3 1/2"

RESONATORS: Pretty much stuck between the two.
MUFFLERS: leaning towards the Vibrant street power 1040. Love the way vibrant cat back sounds but would prefer single tip.
SIZING: am I supposed to go 2.5 inlet/outlet all the way around for cat, resonator and muffler or is there a different way to maximize the flow......?

I replied to your PM also... and I realized I was wrong... you might want to go with a longer res than that LOL 18" would be the smallest I would go.

And heres my setup.. (2.4 engine with 5-speed btw)

Pacesetter header, magnaflow cat, 23" cherry bomb for a resonator, pacesetter monza cat back..

This is an older video of the car but all the engine mods and exhaust parts are the same as I have now...

Its mostly all WOT but if you turn your speakers up you can hear it when its not..... (and never mind the squeaks and rattles LOL)

First run with windows up, the second is with them down..... this vid was also taken after the glass pack broke in all the way.

This is my setup and I think it @!#$ rocks the house, it's super quiet at idle and part throttle, WOT it sounds a bit throaty and mean, louder but not enough to set off alarms.

Tsudo header ---> Magnaflow 2.5" cat ---> 28" Thrush glasspack resonator (it barely fits, you can get shorter ones) ---> 2.5" Dynomax Ultraflow SS (straight though design)

There is no easy ways to get HP, no magic box or gizmo... And if you get more hp, there's no way to make your car still behave and sound like a stock one. More hp usually makes your car louder, more vibrations and harder to drive...but still people hope or think maby there's some magic way to have it all, comfort, stock sound and drive.

No vids or recordings, sorry, no time..take my word for it, hahahahaha.... Oh and no resonations inside the cabin... you have to lower window to hear it... this is a plus for me, but some people actually like hearing the exhaust drone on inside the cabin...
