Venom 400. Dynoed!!
Thursday, August 25, 2005 2:00 PM
Dynoed the black sunfire today. Mods include, Aem intake, custom cat back exhaust, Royal purple 5w30 and syncromax, and venom 400 (that I got for free).
The first run I made the most HP and tq without the venom on.
Hp= 140.98 (141)
Tq=138.64
the next run it went down a little.139.2 137.4

The third run I turned the venom 400 on, It didn't look like it worked...... this run. Torque went up to a max of 139.01 and power went down to 138.2
Somewhat discouraged, I decided to run it again.

The fourth run max power 141.35 and 139.95 (140) torque. Both max numbers in the test. But what was impressive was the below the max power and torque gains.

at 5k rpms the venom started making more power than without, and gained about 5 hp throughout 5-5.6 rpms.
torque peaked twice at 140ft lbs, at 4k and 5k.

will post charts later.

Here's the chart. the lighter line is the torque figure and the darker hp. The red is with the venom 400 on and the blue is with it off.

Feel free to post comments.

These Venom 400s increase horsepower by 25 percent in the 1,000 to 5,000 rpm range and reduce delay when you mash down your throttle.

thats from their site....

you made 141hp and 138tq on the first run without it on.....

you turned it on and did

139hp and 138tq
141hp and 139tq

and then a 4hp or so gain from 5-5.6 and a gain of ONE torque...

mainly because these things simply dump more fuel like an ebay resistor mod, but slightly more controlled..... thats basically the same Karo had happen when he did the jet pcm deal.

for 299$ (granted you got yours for free, def understand that point) that the AVG person will pay....

since you did 141 HP and 138TQ with it OFF

your supposed to get an increase of 25% according to its claims....

25% of 141 is a gain of 35.25HP..... which would have put you around 176......

you didnt even near the 25% gain, you got 1/7th of it at most.... not good for a 300$ part....

just my buck fiddy

Jeez... You're not supposed to use math on this thing.

Seriously... very seriously... I once helped with a project installing a supercharger kit in a VW. The SC kit and corresponding pcm reprogram were supposed to give 48 hp (IIRC) for about $2500. That's a little gain for a lot of cash, imo, but whatever. When strapped to the dyno, it was clear that the 10.0:1 to 11.0:1 AFR's were just too rich, resulting in power gains 1/8 of what they were supposed to be. After a long, drawn out ordeal which resulted in no change, the final quote from the SC kit developer was "Well, you're measuring racing hp. We're talking about gains in street hp." OK, buddy.

Nice to know the Venom provides substantial gains in street hp, and that it's not intended for racing applications.

you could have put that money towards something effective.

Well while it may have done something in the mid range, it still doesnt live up to the compnays hype, and for what it cost is still an expensive paper weight.

Junk IMO.

But for free, hey why not give it a try.

How close were the runs to each other? Where there any cool off time?
Good to see someone dynoing things like this so we know for sure. Also didyou get a air/fuel reading on these runs?

I briefly tried one of these and it does use alot of gas up, is it not possible that your engine was leaning out at 5000rpm? perhaps and adjustable FPR or apexi safc or even new injectors would add that same power or maybe even more than the venom chip. It is doing something btu I think that its correcting a lean condition at high RPMS and thats about it.

Point is, you shouldn't have to make any other modifications, they claim you just hook it up and gain this magic power. And, that obviously doesnt happen.

Dyno time was probably free from UTI since he is a student there?

Yup, cept the $23,000 to go there.

The first three runs were done 2-3 minutes apart, and the last one was 7(car was getting hot) and was 1 degree colder in the room. Should make much of a difference. Rule of thumb is for every 10 degrees drop in inlet temp increases hp by 1%

safc and new injectors actually do something...and consistently.

I bet you that he doesn't need more fuel but probably less fuel to gain power.

eh you're right. i didn't catch that part. i won't exactly say dyno money was wasted. but i guess if you got it for free... then cool. but i'd sell it to a moron who thinks it's a badass piece of equipment.

I can tell you that I could always, always show a nice increase in hp with the following dyno method:

Start car after initial strap down, do power run, do second power run. If a cool day, do a third power run to increase ambient heat.
Shut off car, let sit for about 10 minutes with cooling fan blowing on car.
Start car and immediately do power run.
Magic hp gain appears on dyno cheat! I mean dyno sheet.

I could net 5 - 15 hp minimum "gain" this way almost every time. Think about it and you'll probably figure out where the magic hp came from. I'll tell you it's not just from inlet air temp drop.

Well with that being said I see no hp difference with the venom on. That 7 minute wait could be the reason for the hp increase. To properly do a dyno test, all runs shuld be the same time between each other.

I bet that works. i went to the track and made 4 runs back to back and ran 15.9xx then the lanes started backing up and i had the hood up leting the car cool off, and my next run was 15.62 with the car pulling hard in 3rd hitting the limiter waaayyy before the end. and it did it the next three runs straight to. seems the car heat soak easy.

see ya!
