i was wondering if its possible to put a oil pressure gauge in a j-body and how to hook it up in the car

Yes, its possible, but how to hook it up depends on what kind of gauge you got (mechanical or electrical).

well which one would you get i mean it probably be a a electrical since the mechanical would probably bee 2 short since it needs a line to run from the hook up to the gauge

Yeah, I'd definately do electrical, I wouldn't want oil lines running inside my car, but thats me.

Installation is usually pretty simple. The hardest part is either Tee-ing off the existing oil pressure sensor or finding the extra oil plug on the back of the block, and installing a fitting in there. After that whichever gauge you get will usually come with instructions on how to wire it. Specifics depend on which model and brand you get.

wireing it isnt a problem its when to tap for oil and i have a 2002 2.4L and i wouldnt buy anyother gauge than autometer you wouldnt happen to have a picture of how to tap into the oil line would you

If you have an oil light "dummby light" Your stock oil pressure sensor is just a on/off pressure switch, if pressure drops to far... your light comes on...

You can order an actual sending unit for older J-bodies since some came w/ a stock gauge, and then tap the guage into that (assuming the signal is the same).

As for the 2.4 I'de just put the sending unit where your stock one is, if ti doesn't fit you can use an adapter, but make sure it's not too long and that you use some tethlon tape to keep it from leaking. The sensor should be near the oil filter. What ever you do, make sure you install the sensor after the filter somewhere near it so in the case that your filter bcomes cloged....you'll know about it....thats why the stock sensor is where it's at. Also the restiction of the filter changes the pressure and thats what you want to go by.

did you pull the front bumped off to install the gauge cause that wouldnt even been worth installing it

Ive been told by a few people that the electrical gauges are more known to break or read innacurately... The sender goes bad or something..

I will be running a mechanical gauge in my car.

^ I'd rather replace a sender than have hot oil spraying all over inside my car because of the cheap nylon lines they come with. The only way to do a mechanical gauge correctly inside the car is to use steel braided lines ($$$$$$$$).

Wait a minute! Pull the front bumper off? For an oil gauge? Do you want a oil gauge OR oil cooler? Sounds like the oil cooler not a gauge from what you are saying.

no by the picture it looked like there was alot of room infront of ur motor then there is infront of mine and if i did do the mechical gauge i could run the copper line instead of the plastic line

I installed an electrical gauge. The four pictures you see in the link there are of the back of the engine with the sender installed. All I had to do is to run a single wire from the sender to the gauge in my pillar.

use the search button there is several posts about it , with pics

also i have a pic of where i put the pressure tap on my 2.4 , in 1 of those posts

mine is down near the front of the timing cover , better place , and doesnt require a T-fitting or any extra parts

is there any chance that i can get you to send me the link so that i can see it cause i have never used the search system on here yet

Gauges reading inaccurate and breaking ? Probably coming from people that bought the cheapest gauges they could get their hands on from E-Bay . If you are going to be investing in something that you are going to monitor your engine with , then pay for something that is name brand .

Just remember that even the mechanical gauges can go bad . They use a diaphram inside the gauges that could leak . Not to mention if you don't get the nylon tubing installed right , or it gets cut where it goes through the firewall .

Hey Hey...

Like I said, Im not real sure- Im just sharing a bit of information I heard from a reliable source..

When I was purchasing my gauges, the salemen said- Don't get an electrical oil gauge, Im on my 3rd one already..They always break.. They weren't cheap gauges from Ebay- It was an autometer gauge.. Ive heard this from a few other people as well..

Honestly, I dont really know what kind of gauge is better- Maybe they both have thier advantages and disadvantages.... I mean, if electrical gauges were better, why would they even make mechanical ones..?

Does anyone know where to tap into the fuel on an eco, to hook up a fuel pressure gauge. I need to know where to place the sending unit. I have the autometer fuel psi gauge and i can't hook it up without knowing where to tap the fuel to instert the sending unit...

[quote=97cavie24ls(JDM cav sedan™)]
the line is the copper line attached near the timing cover

[quote=97cavie24ls(JDM cav sedan™)]ive never had any problems with oil leaks in the car , and ive used mechanical gagues for over 20 years

here is where i taped for my oil pressure gauge , it is the copper line it will respond to a pressure loss a bit quicker than up at the head , and requires less parts

<img src="http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/10/web/478000-478999/478869_64_full.jpg">

I can't really see where it connects there. What's it plugged into? Is there some unused port there with a plug in it or something? Do I just remove a plug and plug in the line for the gauge?

Will oil come pouring out when I open that up?

Re: oil pressure gauge install

Well I found half my answer...

[quote=97cavie24ls(JDM cav sedan™)]dont put the oil pressure line on the cam tower

use the fitting that is in the block , its back of the block on the passenger side near the timing chain cover

all you have to do is plug the existing plug out , and use the adaptor in the kit with the pressure gauge

So again... will oil come pouring out when this plug is pulled?

And does an oil pressure gauge line need to be bled somehow? Once I plug this thing in, there will be air in the line and in the gauge. Is there some way to get this out? Will it affect readings?

found this picture on the car doman site if you haven't already seen it weasel, really points out where the connection for the oil should be made. I'm also curious if the spot i've circled is where you could put the sender for a water temperature gauge, as thats where I've been told...

as well, I bought my two electrical gauges on ebay, and I'm really not sure which sender is which. Maybe some of you guys could help me out. Refer to them as 'big sender' and 'small sender' please
