please help!~ starter problem

ill make this short and sweet...... a few weeks back i thought my starter went, got it tested etc, and turned out my ignition switch went... so i bypassed it and put a push start in my car.......

this past weekend i go up to a ski resort, car sat for a f ew days went to start it, no luck, battery was dead, and had to tow the car 200kilometres... changed the spark plug wires, i was getting backfiring before i changed them.....push started my car/ (its manual) and the engine ran fine....... turned the car off, tried to start it and got grinding noises.... thought the starter was pooched after trying to start it so many times up at the ski resort..... changed the starter today with my dad, got a new one from canadian tire, put it in, go to start and got the grinding noise again.. we looked at the flywheel it looked to be fine..... can anyone take a shot at what this might be?

Are you sure the starter is not being engaged all the time i.e. power still there when you release the push switch.

How did you wire it up?

When you checked the flywheel did you rotate the engine as it usually only wears in four spots, where the pistons come up on compression?

It has to be starter related as you say it runs fine with a push start.

Post back 'cos someone will have the answer

This is a quote from the website of Pat Goss

At the moment it's the fifth question down, you may need shims to space the starter correctly for engagement if all other chaekc fail

Pat:

I have a 350 '72 Vette that sounds like a Chrysler product when I start it up. I have changed the starter and the flex ring to no avail. HELP, it's embarrassing.

Thanks.

Answer:

I presume you intended to say 'a Chrysler product with a bad starter'. Chryslers don't make embarrassing noises unless their starter or flywheel has failed.

Anyway, how many shims and what thickness, and what's the spacing between the starter drive gear and the ring gear?

GM requires proper spacing, which is done with shims. The shims are available in different thicknesses from most auto parts stores. Adjusted properly: Noise BeGone.

Is this what your starter looks like, Brendan

Just so we know what we are talking about

Was there ANY wear on the flywheel when you checked it?
