my passenger side window will go down but takes forever (sometimes hours) to get back up i was told that it may be the power window relay, and not the motor, where is the relay at? is it under the door panel or somewhere else,oh yeh and the car is a 94 Z,
I want to know too because my windows are slowing down also.
Your power window motor is dying ... It trips out the thermal relay which then resets itself . You will need to replace the motor.
Have look at this webpage on diagnosing & replacing the power window motor here ..
Clicky .
It is not a Cavalier in the webpage but the power window system is the same. Hope this is of help
My son and I changed the window motor on his 92 Z24. Wasn't that hard but I suggest you buy a pop rivet installer tool for yours. If I have to change one again I'll get one for sure.
WTF??? Is this the time of year that the power windows are set to "expire"?
My drivers side window will not go up. Discovered this last night. Haven't looked at it yet. Will look into it tonight.
The relays on the switch are working on the "down" side, however I don't hear anything when I push the "up" side...
I hope to God that I don't have to replace the motor... from what I've read on here it's a PITA...
Figures, just went over the warrenty limit on mileage...
once n awile after playing with the window it stops working, then after bout 5 mins it works again and this is on the driver side window.
yeah windows are a PITA! i have replaced both of mine on my 01 Z24....you have to take the whole assembly out not counting all the rivets you have to take off and then you have to disassemble the whole assembly then put it back together and all that but i hate doing windows...it sucks...i want manual lol...

Negative. Put them back in using short bolts and some non-permanent thread lock. That way you don't have to mess with the rivets if you ever have to replace them again in the future.

Well...I said use a pop rivet tool. I used short bolts/nuts and it was more trouble than it was worth imho.
yeah just noticed this happening to mine a couple days ago. time for a new motor i guess. i have rivets so i'm good to go. anyone know what part number from napa it is?

Yeah? How so?
So long as they're short enough to not interfere with the regulator (I think 1/2" is right, but don't quote me on that) and they don't come loose on you, all should be well.
Mine's worked better than ever since I changed it.
Also... I ditched the clock spring that was on the regulator. Damned thing tried to kill me.
Instructions will tell you to put a bolt through the regulator to lock it in place before removing the motor... but I didn't read instructions until after I had it apart.
After all sorts of effort to get the damned thing back in place, it fell off shortly after everything was all put together back in the door.
Then I checked the other side and lo and behold... it didn't even have one!
So I left it off and it's worked fine for the past year or so and goes faster than it ever did before!
my passenger window wins the race every time now. counting the days til the driver's side motor goes out.
there was no spring in my regulator, gm must have changed the design at some point

As for the relays not working in the power window switch, I too had this problem last week. I put my window half way down and when I got to work, I went to put it up and the "up" switch would not work. As was stated above, there was a clicking sound when I pushed on the downside which is normal, but nothing on the upside. So, to get the window up for the time being, I just popped of the toggle switch and jammed a very small flat head screwdriver down onto the contact and it worked, the window went up. The next day I went to the scrapyard and picked up another switch for $50 bucks and now everythings is all good. Just thought I'd share my experience incase someone else gets stuck somewhere and cannot get their window to go up because of the switch.

that looks like a good deal, bonus that it comes with the rivets etc.
pylon you might have been able to save 50 bucks by cleaning the switch. seems to be a common fix as i've heard of people taking them apart

Aww crap, I coulda cleaned it??? LOL. Ah well, I kept the old one so maybe I'll try cleaning it now and see what happens.
How do you clean the switch really good?
