Saturday, August 27, 2005 1:21 PM
Im about to work on a 1999 cavy sedan with 2200 motor, The coolent is black lol, I want to know is it as simple as pulling the plug out the radiator , drain it out, and plug it back up, and refill it. And how many bottles of coolent i need to refill it. Ive never seen dexcool as black as this. Then I have to change the value cover gasket, lol offcouse I see its on top, but im just wondering is it as simple as it looks. Any advise or help anybody want to add. I will be starting this monday.

P.s. there more wrong with the car, ill post the rest later.

Yes it is as simple as that.

As for draining the coolant, you cant put it in Bleach bottles, and dont even dare pour it into a sewer or storm drain. Many shops will dispose of coolant for free.

You might what to flush the system. Which is real easy to do. As for it being black, did oil mix with it?

As for the valve cover and gasket : Yes there are just 8 bolts i believe. When you remove the bolts, the cover may not come right off. Use your hand or a block of would to TAP it free. Pull out the gasket, and wipe clean the oil and dirt between the mounting points.

When reinstalling the valve cover, Beware for the piece that holds your spark plug wires. It goes ontop of the valve cover not between it.

I did that once by accident, i wasnt paying attention, and oil sprayed oil over the header and hood. That was a mess.

Also, torque the bolts to proper specs. then drive the car for a few miles, and re tighten the bolts, they loosen up the first time when the engine heats up.

BTW, when the valve cover is off, its a good time to either paint or polish it.

The easiest way I have found to drain the cooling system is too pull the lower radiator hose. It's much faster than draining just the rad and get's more coolant out IMHO. If it's really that bad i'd go buy a bottle of the prestone radiator flush. Follow the instructions on the bottle of flush chemical, but here's the short and sweet of it.

Drain the coolant,
refill with water and flush chemical.
Run car
Drain water and flush chemical
refill with water
run car again
drain water and refill with coolant.

You need one gallon of coolant. Have an extra bottle (washer fluid, or something similar) and mix it 50/50. Since I'm anal, I only use distilled water for the final fill. There's no minerals or anything in it. Just straight water. You can find it at any grocery store, usually a gallon is less than a buck. You'll need one. Just keep pouring until it's up the to the cold full line on the resevoir. Run the car for a little bit, then let it completely cool, and top off. Hope that helps some.

it's gotta be more then that. when my engine overheated this last winter and blew all my coolant out and had to put two bottles in and it still wasn't to the mark on the overflow.

It will take more than that gallon, but your mixing it 50/50 with water. So you only need one gallon of coolant. Get my drift?

To flush your coolant I would get a piece of washer hose and cut it in half. then attach it to your garden hose. Then remove one heater hose and the radiator cap, insert washer in to heater hose then turn on the graden hose and and flush untill all the coolent runs out clear from block, radiator, and heater core. Then repeat in the other direction. After you do this put the washer hose in the radiator neck and run the hose untill system is full( heater hose still disconnected) then run the car, old coolent will flow from the block, run the car untill clear. Then drain about half of the water from the system then add straigh coolant untill you have close to a 50/50 mix.
