I would probably leave it in... Can't defrost your windows when it rains with no A/C.

actaully as logn as you dont run your ac it has no real impact.....just makes teh belt longer technically.
plus not having it will bother you eventually.....im sure you could jsut get a smaller belt and remove all teh ducting

Wait wait, just a min. Your compressor doesnt effect hp as long as its not on. The pulley becomes "free wheeling" For lack of a better term, when the AC is off.

When your AC is ON is when you will lose power.

There is no need to change pullies or belts, but if your really want to circumvent your AC system, The best route is to get the AC delete Pulley/bracket thing. This way you Still have AC for those hot summer days, or hot nights with the misses, all you need to do is change over the belt.

i want to loose the weight not get hp off taking it out. and as for the defrost
the air sucks any way .i use a towel to wipe it off.and for the convenience of airconditioning i roll the windows down and hang my arm out the window
just a little trick my grampa taught me

Well your gonna have alot to remove. All the piping, the condensor, the compressor, and mounts, ALOt. you have save about 10lbs by removing it.

I removed my A/C about 2 months ago when I was replacing my alternator... I never used the air- my windows are usually all the way down anyway, and I figured I could use the freed up space for charge pipes..

Its not that much to remove- and it really cleans up the engine bay alot and losing the A/C lines coming from the firewall makes running my downpipe much easier... I bought a GM part that bolts up in place of the compressor- just a bracket w/ a pulley on it.. I ordered it through GMpartsdirect. It took a few weeks to arrive. Part # 24574519. Total was under 45 bucks.

However, Ive heard of just removing the compressor and running a smaller belt. I am not sure of any part numbers for the belt though- you'll have to do a search.

Just don't stand over the A/C line when you let it out- it shoots this brown oil all over the damn place..

Woah, talk about illegal you're supposed to dispose of that refrigerant properly, not just dump it into the air

But yeah, removing all the A/C only saves you like 35 pounds of stuff... and if you ever try to resell the car, they'll want to know why there's an A/C button but it doesn't work. A/C is pretty expensive to put BACK IN the car... so make damn sure you're doing the right thing.

Anyway.. to answer the original question...

1. Get the system discharged... it's just a bottle it goes into shouldn't be more than $100 or so. Or just crack it yourself, but be careful... oh and kiss the environment goodbye

2. Remove the hardware.. .condenser.. lines.. compressor.. evaporator.. no need to remove the coil from inside the dash... plus it's a pain to get to...

3. Either get a shorter belt (in theory it should work), or get the A/C delete pulley from GM. It replaces the spot the A/C compressor occupies... but its just an idler pulley.

What about cars without A/C from the factory? ( I realize this is rare nowadays)

i had a 92 cavi with a 2.2 with no air. That son of a gun would fly. It was much faster than my 97 with the same engine with air that doesn't work anymore. But i have never seen a 3rd gen without air. I am sure they made one but i haven't seen one yet. But as being bad for the the enviroment, Isn't that for r-12 only? i thought that r-134 was fine for the enviroment. That is why auto makers started using it in 1995. And if it was bad for the enviroment then you wouldn't be able to go to your local wal mart and buy a can.
