My parents have an 01 Cavalier with a 2.2L 4 spd auto and about 59,000 on it. The last few weeks the Check Engine light has been on continuously. I used a code reader to get the code and only P0440 came up. According to the service manual, its a problem with the vacuum in the fuel system. I checked the fuel cap and it was tight, but I replaced it anyways with a new one. The CEL is still on. The manual says that it could be a hose that is kinked or a electrical connection that has broken on the EVAP system. Has anyone had to work or had work done on this? I dont want to have my parents spend a buttload of money at the dealer only to say that its the gas cap and hand them a bill for $400 bucks.
Thanks
I got the code during winter when i first got mine, and i think it happened after car wash (removing salt). My conclusion was i got water in the purge valve in back and it froze somewhat open, causing a small leak and p0440. If anything id take it to a carwash and spray all the emmissions stuff under trunk really well, maybe there's a chunk of crud lodged somewhere?
hope this helps

This was on in mine & I tried everything & nothing would work! I finally got under the car & looked around at the black box by the gas tank. There was some wires coming out of that into another littler black box. It was a wire w/ connectors on the end about 6" long. One of the wires was cut, there is a little red & white wire in the wire loom. I had to purchase that at the dealership & it was like $45.00 but that did it!!! The light hasn't been back on now for 10,000 miles!!

Brett did you clear the code after u replaced the gas cap? Clear it and then see if it comes back on in a couple days.
This weekend I looked under the car like Travis said and he was right. There were 2 wires hanging in space that broke off a connector. I took tiny harness out and resoldered the leads back on the connector and plugged it back in. I had to clear the P0440 code still but the Check Engine light is still out. Thanks for all your help guys.
