Yes, I searched... I thought for sure this would have been covered but I couldn't find it.
Working on an 03 cavalier 2.2 ecotec, with a dead fuel pump. The parts store monkey tells me I need to buy the whole plastic sender assembly with fuel pump embedded for a cool ***$450***. I nearly laid an egg in my drawers.
Now, I've disassembled the sender assebly, and I have the pump out of it, and it's pretty similar to the other electric fuel pumps I've seen used in modern cars. Does anyone know the part number of it, or the part number of something I can substitute for it? I did read the writeup on installing the blazer pump, but I'd rather not go through the hassle of modifying the new pump, and possibly modifying the sender fuel can assembly. If nothing else will fit I'm considering buying an inline pump and just running a suction line into the tank where the in-tank pump normally sits.
Just being impatient... Anyone? I know fuel pumps are a common question topic, but I still haven't found any posts anywhere else with the stock replacement PID#
Hey, let me tack on a question here... I replaced the fuel pump in my 92 wagon last year, and it was just the pump I bought. I'm pretty sure the 1992 2.2L I4 has similar fuel requirements to the later ones. Does anyone have specs on the older pump? Will it work on the newer car?
I dunno if I said something I didn't mean - by I4 I mean inline 4. The 4 cyl that was in the 1992 cavaliers. I don't know if that ebay pump will fit, but judging by the price of it, used, it's probably the whole sending unit.
I want to go brand new - these things are obviously not all that reliable if it's died after 4 years. I just want to find an equivalent PUMP ONLY instead of the whole bloody sending unit, because the cost of one is ridiculous. I would use the blazer pump, BUT, the faq article is pretty vague on how to get it to fit, and I've heard a number of points that suggest it's not the best idea in the world (noise, may or may not need to mod fuel can, may not suck tank all the way to empty, etc.)
I've heard of people who have bypassed the faulty gas tank fuel pump. They fit an in-line fuel pump in the fuel line from the tank. The new pump just sucks the gas through the old pump. It's much easier to fit and you don't have to drop the tank. The new pump must deliver fuel at the same pressure as the old one.
As I recall, it was a Honda type of in-line fuel pump that cost under $100 a few years ago. I think they got it from Auto-Zone. Can't give you much more info about it though.
Considered doing that as well. I may still wind up using that solution. Thanks!
check some of the aftermarket pumps...Venom makes a high performance pump that you drop into the cannister for most of the Cavs.
Check out my build thread!
Thanks! I looked into the venom pumps - slightly cheaper, but not much. This is so ridiculous. I am developing the opinion that a Delco EP313 fuel pump from a 1992 cavalier will do the job (for $100 as opposed to $350). I bet it's the same pump, except one comes with a bunch of extra crap I don't need.
If you try the 92 pump and it works, let us know, we could all use a different pump solution...
I've been checking my Chiltons manual and it seems as if the fuel pump must deliver 41 - 47 psi fuel pressure. So if you do buy an in-line pump be sure that it is in that range. But I'm sure that if you contact the supplier they will sell you the correct pump for your model car.
Hello Cameron Vermeulen, Those inline electric fuel pumps work great, My friend just added one into his 87 camaro, His gas tank is a plain to get in & out of his car, So he decided to add this inline fuel pump installed, Works great. Of course the pump is way cheaper route to go. Its all depends on youre choice, To remove the tank in Cavalier isn't to bad, The price of the pump is pretty steep. Are you installing these fuel pumps?.
Good Luck
Looking at the specs on the bottom of the page of my link, I think the model GSL391 190LPH for $109.99 would work for the Cavaliers. If you look at the graphs you will see that it easily does 41 - 47 psi.
The thing about this mod is that it's easy to do and you don't have to drop the tank. If my pump goes out this is what I will be fitting to my Cavalier.
I bit th ebullet and bought the replacement sender assembly - it's the girlfriend's car, so I didn't want anything going wrong with it. If it was mine, I'd have bought the MSD inline pump and just dropped a hose down into the tank.
You don't even have to drop a hose down the tank. Just break into the fuel line at the bottom of the car and fit the in-line pump and it will suck the fuel through the old in-tank fuel pump.
my fuel pump went on my 03 cavalier with 60,000 miles, it was $300 for a new one, man it sucked but was easy to replace.
GOD : The way, the truth, and the life.
If you use an inline pump do you have to prime it or does maintain fuel pressure to the pump by itself? Has anyone added the inline fuel pump to their cavalier that remembers exactly what they had to do? I am just about to the point doing something like this as my OEM fuel pump has died again, for the third time.

Is that means cut the hard fuel line under the car? If so, there'll be alot of work to get the fitment attach to the hard line and connect to the fuel pump.

does this not work for the eco? last time i priced one of these pumps, it was $81 new...
It actually didn't say what year/Gen J-body will work. That route is more OEM and I might think about that too.
I've a 96 LD9 and the fuel pump assemly cost $240 at www.partsamerica.com. I'm not sure I need a new pump or not cuz the car didn't start now. If a new pump is necessary, I'll need some solution too. Anyone had some pics of how to install an in-line pump, any vehicle is fine. Or anyone knows what year/gen will work with the second methol.
