Like many of us, I have had the P-0440 code coming up on my 2000 Z24 for the last 3-4 months. I started out with the standards:
1. Re-tighten the gas cap - didn't work
2. Replaced the gas cap - didn't work
As luck would have it, while at the dealer looking at another car (for my wife), a tech approached me. He knew me from back in high school, but for some reason I didn't remember him. Regardless, he really helped me out.
So if you have the P-0440 code and have tried to replace the gas cap with no luck here is how to get rid of this code:
1. Pick up GM part number 15215729 ($35 Cdn). The bag will look like this:
The part will look like this:
2. Jack up the passenger rear tire. Right behind the tire you will see this valve box assembly with a connector going into the back of it.
3. Disconnect the electrical connector and 'pop' the valve box of the car frame. For me it was easy, but the tech stated you might need a screw driver the top the piece off the frame. Now the box will be hanging by a hose:
4. Using a pair of vice grips (or pliers) compress the spring hose clamp and remove the valve box from the car.
5. Re-install the new valve box in the reverse order.

That fixed your perticular problem.
It's an evap emissions leak. It could be any # of things.
Best to have it (evap system) smoke tested for leaks.

yes it can....may have a rotted hose somewhere too.....a 440 is not just for that valve...
I had the same code on mine, P0440 & mine was one of the wires going from that little black part to the bigger black part. The wire had 2 wires in it w/ clips on each end. It was about 4" long, it solved my problem!

i've had this code going for close to a year now.. dealer first fixed it under warranty but after it went on again and i was not under warranty anymore i decided to let it go. besided screwing up emissions does this have any negative effect on the car?

I am gonna try that swap...I've had mine for a week now.
95% of the time it is that valve. Just changed mine. $34.15 at the dealer. Problem all fixed. It only took 5 minutes max, after jacking the car up, and blocking the wheels.

Well I hope your job isnt a tech. "well boss this part was bad last time so I though it was this time to, nope didnt bother to test it".

Anyone that doesnt bother to test parts before replacing them.
EVERY part of the car can be tested, to see if it working correctly.

Agreed, but there are lots of people who just want to save the money on labour costs especially from a dealership and do the work themselves. I have found that most techs see a reoccuring problem and know what will fix it 90% of the time. So he gave an old friend some advice and it happend to work in this situation. Even if the tech was wrong, it was a gamble from the beginning and the risk was to replace a part that might not have worked in the first place. We all take those chances, and the end result was that he saved himself the diagnosis time and spent 5 minutes replacing it.

I had my gas cap and both the front and rear valves tested and the rear valve wasn't functioning properly. The part is under $40cdn but they wanted to charge me the same for labour. So I did it myself. Didn't even have to jack the car up, just slide under the rear bumper and popped the valve off and stuck the new one on (this only works if you're scrawny like me).
Thanks for the tutorial, I would have messed around with it for hours if it wasn't for the pictures.

I've needed to get this part for over 6 months now. I know that's what is throwing my code.. I just haven't had the time to get it and replace it. Great picture/tutorial though =D

trust me it works well, only issue i have is when i went down gravel roads (i stopped altogether now) it got dirty and had to blow dust out. what happens is the little plunger binds up from dust (there is a little filter sponge which does jack $h!t) and causes the leak. lo and behold P0440. i cleaned out old one, but it was so bad i had to get new one, and i cleaned it once and no cel. HAHA Eat that p0440! the part was like $25 with tax US
i have also tried new gas cap, redid wiring harness (no corrosion at all b4 i did anyway), took solenoid apart and actually confirmed this was the problem...o rings were destroyed and yeah it was a mess. just to those who doubt this fix............
