i dont think they are all that bad of a car. my 91 is a great car, extremely cheap on gas and still making very close to the EPA rated 22/29 MPG rating despite being 17 years old, only having a simple little 2.2 tbi engine, and over 137K on the clock. its easy to work on and very dependable. i dont think its any better or worse than a similar year honda, toyota or anything else that people say is better. i also have 98 cavalier with a 2.2 and while i still have some issues with the CEL its still a nice running car. its quieter than the 91 and it rides better, the complexity of the newer car just comes from the fact that its a newer car (OBD II). the 91 was built simple therefore its easier to work on. i dont think cavaliers are as bad as a car that import drivers like to make them out to be. the seem to run allot better and longer than similar domestic cars from the same years. compare year for year neon, escort, ect. usually the cavalier compares favorably in terms of reliability.
Andrew i think you may have just opened up a huge can of worms with your post, but let me just say i agree with you completely i have a 2004 Ls Sedan with the 2.2 ecotec engine. With 108,000 on the clock and it still runs like the day i bought it, and it only had 18,000 on it then and the first 80,000 miles were mostly highway and interstate driving. I've had basically no problems whatsoever to speak of, as long as you do the maintenance on them they will last you in my opinion only equal if not better than a comparable honda or toyota etc.
people used to call it a chick car but hot chicks drive scion tc's usually now lol
yeah i hate it to. unfortunately its the way it goes, though.
ive heard complaints from the interior being crap to crap design and lack of looks. IMO they are wrong. but i cant change the world.
my 91 2.2 tbi might be on the slow side, but i feel that with 137K, she's not even tired, doesnt use any oil at all, doesn't leak either . i love driving this little car just because for its age its in so good of condition. no rust none what so ever. i just like to drive around and let import drivers see it. its like, look at my car 17 years old and still looks good. their toyota that they speak so highly of probably wont even make it past 10 years before its a recycled soup can. im not really a fan of imports, i needed a car that was good on gas, so i think a earlier cavalier was a good choice. i also wanted simple and easy to work on. i also want to keep this car in its present condition. i live the nasty salt belt, so im having it oil treated every year by a company called carwell. i also cleaned up all of the door seams where rust usually starts and applied a coat of paint along all of the seams. what else can i do to keep my car nice. its a southern car so the body is almost perfect. i have a feeling that this car is going to run forever if i can take proper care of her. here is a link to my gallery. the pics are of my two chevies. 1989 camaro RS 305 and a 1991 cavalier 2.2. i dont drive the camaro in the winter but i have no choice but do drive the cavalier in the winter. i would be sad if my super clean 91 cavalier rusted to @!#$ like the rest of them on the road.

Andrew, once again i have to say that i agree with you i don't feel mines tired either no leaks on mine mine doesn't go through oil. Yet i've heard some hondas and toyotas burn the stuff like it's going out of style. I like you am not a fan of imports the Cavy is cheap on gas and as you said if you take care of it and baby it it will last you forever or pretty darn close In my opinion.
at 4.30/gal nothing is "cheap" on gas anymore. although my cavy takes 45 bucks to fill and goes 300 miles on a tank, which is damn good. so its more economical to operate, but these days nothings cheap. it costs 8 bucks to fill my garden tractor to mow the lawn and years ago you could almost fill the cavy for that. times have changed.
thats an average of 27 MPG and no one will believe me when i say its that good. oh well, their loss if they dont want to believe me.
Mine takes anywhere from $45 to 50 but is still cheap to run i drive a V8 at work and that costs about $100.00 or so to fill up i would take my cavy in a heartbeat over that.
as far as if the interiors look good or not, who cares. It's a jbody, i have this car for one reason, cheap to buy and i know how to make it surprisingly quick.
That's the only reason you bought the car for, heck you could have bought a bicycle they're cheap to buy too.
cavs get ragged on because
1--they are econo cars. bottom of the line, cheap models dont usually mean much to most people
2--they are domestic. most people think that import > domestic
3--they are GM. most people think that GM is the bottom rung on domestics
4--most cavs are slow as balls. most people associate "cavalier" with their grandma's 2.2 ohv grocery getter.
even though we know they can be made fast or look good, most people dont think of them like that.
As for the interior.... the only real bitch I have is the rattles..... you all know what I mean...
And Tabs.... I thought most people thought Fords where the most craptastic as far as domestics go.
Bill.... ya bicycles are cheap..... but bolting a supercharger to it just makes it harder to ride LOL
My car is only getting about 22 or 23MPG highway... but thats prob my mods and the way I drive.... Everyone (that doesn't know J-bodies) says the quad-4 engines are crap and like to explode... but I don't know what they are talking about.... most of those people that say that had quad 4 grand ams that they redlined constantly... and think it's a bad engine... but there not..... My car does like to eat a little oil (about a quart every 3K) I'm not sure where it goes though.... it's not leaking and I'm pretty sure it's not burning it.... maybee it's the EGR IDK.
The reason people (the masses anyway) hate J-bodies is because of ignorance and the fact it isn't a "status" car.....
People actually think that the car they drive effects or has something to do with the quality of person they are
what retards.
i wish i could drive a civic so i could have that good 'status'
i'm not really a huge fan of the quad 4 either, but i love the 2.2. its a great little engine with alot of longevity. who cares if a j body isnt a status symbol. status symbols cost over 100 bucks to fill these days. my mom had a 1991 ford tempo back in the day. mechanically it was worse off at 75k and 5 years then my current 91 cavy is at 137k and 17 years old. as gutless as my 2.2 tbi is the tempo engine was a whole lot worse, it had a hard time making it up a hill. they were comparable cars as back in 1991. i would much rather have 91 cav than a 91 tempo. fords suck. i had people laughed at me for buying a 91 cavalier. i say bite me, 7k later i have no regrets. cars runs great and delivers awesome mileage. i paid a premium because my car was a southern car from Maryland. it was worth every dime.its such a simple car that i know i can keep running reliably for cheap for many years, no one can say that about imports. they are expensive to fix and everything breaks sooner or later. i think imports are no better.
as far as Z24's go im not a huge fan of the later ones. however i love the earlier V6 z24's. my uncle had a 88 with a 2.8 v6 and that little car handling great. someone liked it enough to steal that car. they drove it around until it ran out of fuel. he got the car back and drove it for 2 more years.
civics and camry suck and are so over rated.
so your all butt hurt about people saying the cavalier sucks.... yet you come in here saying civics and camrys suck, that Ford in general sucks....
So everyone else is wrong and only your opinion is right? Or are you a just a whiny bitch hypocrite???
i am definitely a whiny bitch hypocrite.
cav's suck, civics suck, camry sucks, a sunfire is what you need

why does someone who doesnt even own a cavalier get a say?
people in the country are so biased against american cars.i have owned countless GM vehicles. mostly simple tbi engines. i have NEVER had an engine failure and only 1 transmission rebuilt in all of the years i have been driving. i feel that they are just as dependable as an import, and the parts are much cheaper when it comes time to repair it.

Because I have owned 3, and loved each of them in their own way. So, my say is as valid as any other.
