Took my sideskirts off the cav this spring break on monday and discovered the little rust I had showing was alot of rust that was hiding...
I blame...
GM for cheap paint...even on a cheap car...its an 01 with <80k miles
GM for cheap quarters....ditto...
Illinois/specifically joliet area for too much @!#$ salt...
Razzi kit and whoever put it on for trapping more moisture in this rot prone area...
Drivers quarter...
Rocker
Pass Quarter
PAss rocker
WAS decent looking...
So on the agenda...NEED sideskirts...stock Z24, LSS, or Xtreme Tuner. Might slide for WW or RK but would rather stick with GM, dont trap any water like the Razzi's do.
The repair, going to attempt to section the quarter where the good metal starts and either weld in a patch or Fusor a fiberglass replacement for the entire lower quarter/rocker area. Just need to figure out a way to get the shape I want out of it (referring to fiberglass method...metalwork does not scare me as much)
Whatchu guys think?

ouch. but... that is normal.
get on the fixing immediately before it gets worse!
We all need somebody to believe in something...
sexy car...too bad...glad to hear your up for the challenge!
Good looking ride bro, good luck with it
ROLL IT TOPLESS!!
Salt+traped moisture=rust. It happens to every vehicle. I guess I should be more pissed than you because my 96 K1500 with 130K on it is far worse than your car and it never had sideskirts to trap the moisture.
I think that a company or two make patch panels for that repair. I would have to look again as I anticipate needing to do the same repair to my 98 and 02 in teh near future. MI roads get a @!#$ load of salt every year and it takes its toll on everything.
Going to agree with clyde here.. another reason they rust as well is because i'm almost positive there is some sound deadening foam in the bottom of the 1/4 to well prevent road noise. that foam likes to trap moisture and allow the metal to rust from the inside out.. I see alot of Js rusting out there though. I wouldnt be surprised if my 03 is bad on the inside
Definately weld in new pieces, dont fiberglass.
hey atleast it wasnt as bad as my 96 lol tyler had to change my whole quarter on one side and half of the other
It could be worse. Much worse. My 00 cav, from the drivers side:
alex, you can do my car while your at it, the 96 is gettin nasty and spreading =/

Hence why they bubble underneath the gas door.
Don't blame GM for Razzi sides though, lol.
The more I see stuff like this, the less I want to put sides on my car... Sucks to see the damage, but I can tell you're going to fix it up.
I have a pair of white 00-02 LSS sides, they're not prefect, but they're here. [Henderson NC]
If you don't wash the car religiously during the winter you are more to blame.
I couldn't go back to living in a salt state. F that @!#$.

Not sure about that.
Washed the wife's 03 Cav like crazy, still got rust. (not as bad though)
My 04 has NO rust (pretty sure, anyways) from 6 MI winters. Granted, it doesn't come out when there is salt either......
looks like my wifes car it started to rust out near the corner of the rocker and quater panel, in the next few weeks the car is getting stripped and sand blast and to see how bad the rust is. that what happens when the car dont get washed all the time.
