I Searched through 300+ posts and could not find a really good How-To, plus I have a few questions...
I have the tan headliner just like everyone else and want to use the dye spray to make it gray. Can someone who has actually done this give a few pointers? I am more than a little nervous about doing this because the dealer wants 350 bucks for a replacement...
I know how to get the headliner out (and that you do NOT have to bend it) - my questions are what color spray to get, and what brand.
And also, did spraying it cause ANY difference to the texture of the material? I do not want any hard places, lumps, etc.
Is it easy to get it nice and even?
Thanks for any help you can send my way!
Steve
yep i dyed mine with some of that spray die stuff...worked great.
basicly by about 3-4can of it depending on how dark you want it.
start off with nice even coats if you miss a spot don't stop to fill it in(could lead to that area to become darker) wait for the next coat.
it takes about 2 coats for the die to sink in and start showing. i think i did about 10-12 coats on mine to make it a nice dark black.
i used 3 cans of this
this stuff is nice since its a fabric and vinal DYE, you can use it on the molding if needed doesn't dry doesnt get tacky and doesn't show scratchs.
and it came out like this
if you got a sunroof it acctually makes it easier, just use long strokes and make sure you spray past the edge dont stop at it (runs)
I wish I could find one to swap from an older Cav, but it's too hard to find one around here, at least one in decent shape.
Big Boi, you have come through for me once again - that looks great.
Can I email you with specific questions?
Thanks, guys!
Steve
dumb question, but u guys took the headliner off when spraying it right? u didn't do it while in the car...correct? What is the procedure to take it off? just remove the visors, a-pillars and then pull?
without sunroof I think there's 3 plastic pins that hold it, remove a pillars, visors and if you can get the side panels in the rear out it make things even easier... to get it out and in without a scratch, but I didn't removed my rear panels....

ya you do wanna take it off, i put it on a nail in my car port and went to town on it kinda just working in a circle around it sunroof out for one coat, then from horizontal strokes, then vertical strokes, then one more LIGHT sunroof out circle, i used the diffrent spray strokes to keep it even, main thing dont spray it all one way, rotate that bitch.
and to remove you have it right visors, a-pillars, your gonna need to remove molding (on 03+ our doorsill to roof has a flap that lays over the edge) and you will need to pop out the rear panels(NOT OFF, just out at the top) it should slide forward then its just a matter of manuvering it out of the car, it will fit even tho it seems not. Also depending on the options your cav came with there will be several wires taped to the top side of the roof make sure you pull these free with your hand.
I also used 3 cans of this and i couldn't be happier w/ my headliner. It looks amazing! I'm not sure if thats the gloss black or flat black, the sell both. I used the flat black and it turned out perfect.
Has anyone ever heard of trying white? I think that would be cool. I might try it myself if i get good responses on it!

i used the gloss black but there isnt much gloss to it just kinda gives the "glow/shimmer" with the interior lights on, but this stuff leaves the fabric feeling like fabric so it wont show much, but on the trim it makes them look like theres perm. coating of armor all on em .
Does it come in White too?

Yup. White, tan, dark blue (navy), flat black, gloss black, medium gray, dark gray (graphite), dark red, red, blue, yellow and silver.
Now for a quick question of my own concerning this project as I plan on doing this very soon.
How do you get the airbag 'stickers' off of your visors to dye them?

on them i couldnt figure it out tried everything then finally destroyed em using solvent
so i went to a fabric store bought 1 yard of black feltish fabric and some spray on glue. 6 bucks total and i sprayed the mirrors with the same dye (u can pop the glass out) Just used the old fabric for a template for the felt
Yeah I kind of figured that they weren't removable. Stupid idea on GM's part.. it's not it's illegal to remove those stickers or anything, otherwise every car manufacturer would 'embed' them like that. They're an eyesore.

how do your sprayed headilners feel? i use carpet and vinyl dye at work all the time, but havent had good experiences with dying headliners, they feel crusty....
i use automagic brand though
on mine at first they were a little tacky, now they feel almost exactly like a stock one. i think you would get the same texture if you were to dye it with a sharpie marker.
has anyone used the spray for seats? i'm too poor to get seats reupholstered right now lol
What about the trim around the sunroof, and the slider and handle, same for the visors, can all these things be dyed?
also did the headliner, and also the rear deck, black, workd out just fine, looks like it came from the factory.and i would imigane it would work just as well on the seats, goin to do the same in the future.
I was just gonna ask about removing the entire headliner.

on mine everything you listed was the tan color, it all dyed and came out great since its a dye i havent had a problem with rubing off since its "inside" the material not just on top like paint.
heres a close up of the trim
Big Boi that looks awesome - how did you dye the trim piece around the sunroof?
I can't wait to do this project soon.
